Community Christmas Concert

 

A Community Christmas Concert featuring three church choirs will be celebrated on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The free concert is at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church, 2511 Longwood Drive in Reedsport.

 

In addition to the local LDS choir, guest choirs are the 17-member Saint Monica Catholic Church of Coos Bay and the United Presbyterian Church of Reedsport. There will also be several individual performers, including soprano Diane Beggs of Lakeside performing "Ava Maria."

 

 The audience will join in singing Christmas carols throughout the program. Additionally, a selection of nativities from private collections will be on display. Light refreshments will be served.

Several artists will be joining CDABA at its First Friday. . . Art for Everyone event on Friday, December 7, 2012 between 5-7 pm. 

 

Artist who will have displays include:  Sue Bridston, paper crafting; Rose Burch, painter; Tom Castanda, wood carving; Tim Fitzgerald, driftwood; Bill & Mikayle Karcher, ceramics; Jim Thompson, ceramics; Kathy Elfers, felted wool; Beebee Slater, painter; and Jost Zetsche, author.

 

This First Friday event will be hosted by Coastal Ceramics, 159 So. 20th, and will be a year end thank you celebration.  There will be wine and finger foods at the event.  CDABA wishes to say thank you to all of its supporters, artists, and the community for showing such great support during the year.

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS FOR THE FALL GALA Event

 

My how time flies – the Fall GALA Event is this coming Saturday!  Seems just yesterday that the planning committee was gathering to make plans.  And now is the time that you can offer your assistance – volunteers are being sought to help in decorating the Reedsport Community Building into the spectacular venue that it has become the past two years.

 

Volunteers are needed starting at 3 pm on Thursday, October 25, to help transform the room.  There will be tasks of all sizes---something for everyone---no matter your capability. 

 

Volunteers are also being sought for Saturday starting at 4 pm and throughout the event.  Volunteers are needed on Saturday to assist with the dessert auction, to count votes for the various contests (table decorating and costume), to assist with tickets at the door, and with the silent auction.  Volunteers are also needed during the band portion of the evening starting at 8:30 pm.

 

The Fall Gala "Full Evening" Dinner starts at 5 pm with no-host cocktails, followed by dinner at 6 pm.  The "After Dinner Party" with music by Soulpie is from 9 p.m. to Midnight.  (Full details below.)

 

Costumes are encouraged for this year's "Masked" event, but not required.  Get together with your friends and see what unusual team theme you can create.

Songs from "Brigadoon" and two originals by Charles Perkins will highlight the Fall concert of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO). The Reedsport concert, which continues the second decade of bringing live music to coastal audiences, will be a matinee on Sunday, November 11 at 2 P.M. in the Pacific Auditorium located on the grounds of the Reedsport Community Charter Schools.
 
Tickets at $10 each are now on sale at the Umpqua Bank in Reedsport. They can also be purchased at the door on the afternoon of the program. A season ticket package, containing tickets for the Fall Winter and Spring concerts is also available for a reduced price of $25.
 
A wide array of selections from classical to Pops will be the pattern for the coming season. This concert begins with the spirited "dance of the Tumblers," by Rimsky-korsakov and ends with Bizet's Farandole from "L'Arlesienne Suite."
 
Directing OCCO for this program is Associate Conductor John monks. Concertmaster of OCCO is Barbara Wilcox.

Just a quick reminder, this Friday evening at the Mindpower Gallery is another $5 Friday class with Sue Bridston. Sue's offering the mixed media class"Acrylic Resists for Color Washes". Everyone who had the opportunity to take her classes in the spring was really happy they did. The class is from 6pm – 8pm.
 
On Saturday morning at the Presbyterian Church Ruthanne Skinner will hold a hands on Beginning Cross Stitch class. The class is from 10am – 2pm. The cost is $15 for the class and $12 for a complete kit of all the supplies you'll need except for small scissors.
Ruthanne still needs to get the supplies so I need to know by Wed. morning for her class.

Volunteers are very welcomed – volunteers will be transforming the City Hall Gym into a "over the top" venue for the night's festivities.  Volunteers are also needed the night of the event---volunteers are needed for ticket takers at the door, alcohol monitors, table monitoring, and clean-up crew.  Volunteers are also needed on Sunday to reverse all that great decorating.  Contact Tamara at 541-271-2485 to volunteer.

Free Flu Shot Clinics for the Uninsured

 

Flu season is upon us and many have found themselves without the resources to get vaccinated. Oregon Coast Community Action has partnered up with Walgreens Pharmacy to make sure underserved individuals on the South Coast are getting the protection they need to stay healthy this fall and upcoming winter.

 

ORCCA and Walgreens have set up free flu shot clinics for underserved adults without health coverage. The shots will be administered on the 2nd floor of ORCCA's Child and Family Resource Center, located at 1855 Thomas Ave. in Coos Bay on the following dates:

 

Thursday, October 25 10:00am - 1:00pm
Thursday, November 8 1:00pm - 4:00pm
Thursday November 15 10:00am - 1:00pm

 

It is important to get vaccinated annually, as the strains of the virus can change every year. The flu vaccine can provide protection for up to a year, and is key to preventing the spread of the seasonal flu, which can lead to much more serious health complications. Getting a flu shot is the best preventative method for avoiding the flu!

New Owners of the Reedsport Natural Foods Welcome First Friday

 

Greg Viert and Patsy Sichley, new owners of the Reedsport Natural Foods store are looking forward to hosting Friday's art event featuring Chris Lechuga.  Greg and Patsy are native Oregonians.  After living in Hawaii and Arizona, they returned to Oregon 13 years ago when they moved to Reedsport.  The couple said that they have spent the last 13 years encouraging people to come to Reedsport.  They believe that when people come to Reedsport, no matter how long they stay, the local businesses benefit. 

 

They are also looking forward to continuing the Arts & Business Alliance with CDABA and are please to host the upcoming First Friday . . . Art for Everyone event featuring Chris Lechuga on Friday, October 5, 2012 between 5 and 7 pm. 

 

Chris is a Reedsport High School graduate.  He took up illustrations and drawing and has been enjoying it ever since elementary school.  Chris has had no formal training but worked many years with his late mother, Michele Lechuga, who was a well-known artist in the area.  Some selected pieces of Michele's work will also be shown.

The Reedsport Education Enrichment Foundation (REEF) was established in the year 2000 by a group of community members and parents concerned about the academic well being of Reedsport youth. Since that time REEF has raised over $200,000.00 for the Reedsport School District, granting funds for fields trips, classroom supplies, Missoula Theater, FBLA Conferences and other enhancements to the academic programs of our local schools.

To continue offering these opportunities to our children, we need your help! Please donate what you can to help us maintain this level of support to out schools. REEF is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your financial contribution is tax-deductable to the extent allowed by law. Great Afternoons Chefs' Harvest Event!

 

Join us for the Reedsport Chef's Garden Harvest Lunch, a fundraiser for the Great Garden in Reedsport!

 

Chefs from 2 local Reedsport restaurants will be taking part in the event and cooking up some unique specialties for people to try! Both chefs have grown organic produce in the Great Garden that will be featured in their dishes. This year, the event will feature:

 

• Newman Humble of The Schooner Café
• Lauree Serang of Harbor Lights Restaurant
• Tea from the Sourdough Baker in Winchester Bay

 

The event takes place Sunday, October 7th, from 12 to 2pm. Tickets are $5.00 for the chef's plate and $1.00 for dessert prepared by the Reedsport Community Charter School Culinary Class and Chef Laura Squglio. In order to encourage recycling and waste reduction, guests are encouraged to bring their own table service to the event and receive a free dessert! Tickets can be purchased at Harbor Lights, Schooner Café, Ace Hardware, or the Sourdough Bakery in Winchester Bay.

 

Proceeds from the event will directly benefit Reedsport's Great Garden. The Great Garden offers educational opportunities for children and community members to learn about gardening, nutrition, environmental science and biology. The garden also rents plots to local individuals and families, and also donates produce to the local community.  Last year 1,800 pounds of fresh produce were donated to local Reedsport food pantries. This year, the Great Garden was opened to members of the public to learn about gardening and harvest their own produce for free! Over 1,000 pounds of food have already been harvested by local residents.

 

The Great Garden is a community garden coordinated through Great Afternoons, a program of Oregon Coast Community Action, which offers daycare service in the Reedsport area and provides resources for parents to better support their families and improve their lives.

Celebrate community at the 7th Annual Octoberfish Festival!

 

Celebrate our coastal community at the 7th Annual Octoberfish Festival from 12-6 on Saturday, Oct. 6th at Old Charleston School! Octoberfish is an annual Charleston-based family festival that celebrates our coastal community, featuring locally produced food, art, music, and sustainable practices.

 

This year, Octoberfish will be celebrated in conjunction with National Estuaries Day, and feature special activities with the South Slough National Estuary Research Reserve. The day will begin with an exploration of the South Slough with the paddling enthusiasts of Coos Bay's new SurfRider chapter! Bring your kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, life vests, and estuary-themed costumes and join a huge flotilla of paddle enthusiasts on a 4 mile round trip journey from Charleston to Valino Island. Registration for the paddle regatta begins at 8, with a suggested fee of $15, and paddles depart at 8:30. To sign-up or for more information on the regatta, please call (541) 888-5558!

 

The afternoon festivities begin at 12 at the Old Charleston School, located on Seven Devils Rd. Admission for the festival is $1 per person, and a Tuna Guys meal is $9, or $20 for the whole family! Walt's Pourhouse and Ninkasi Brewing Company will be hosting a beer garden for the event, and Coos Head Co-op Snack Bar will be featuring a number of healthy snacks and treats. A shuttle service from the Mill Casino will be provided on the hour, every hour from 11-6.

 

Featured at this year's Octoberfish is some of the best music our area has to offer including 5 lb. possum, the GUILD band, Sean and Marley, Rhythm Village African Drum and Dance Ensemble, Ston Soop, and Stepping on Embers!

 

The festival is organized by a variety of community partners, including Oregon Coast Community Action, South Slough Estuary, Sol Coast, ORCOArts, the Tuna Guys, 97.3 Hot Country K-SHORE, the Mill Casino, Walt's Pourhouse, Ninkasi Brewing Company, Vend West, NW Natural and more!

 

Celebrate our community all day on Saturday by checking out events being put on by our community partners! Join Sol Coast in the morning on a Solar Home Tour of the bay area or join the Coos Bay Art Museum in the evening for their annual Fall Fling For the Arts. First Friday feature – Chris Lechuga

 

First Friday . . . Art for Everyone will feature Chris Lechuga on Friday, October 5, 2012 between 5 and 7 pm.  Chris is a Reedsport High School graduate.  He took up illustrations and drawing and has been enjoying it ever since elementary school. 

 

Within the last two years he has taken up acrylic and oils, specializing in landscapes.  Chris was inspired to give acrylic and oils a try after taking of a community class offered by the current high school art teacher, Kyle Mulligan. 

 

Chris has had no formal training but worked many years with his late mother, Michele Lechuga, who was a well-known artist in the area.  Some selected pieces of Michele's work will also be shown.  Michele worked with wood, created some murals and was always a community participant in art projects.  Chris finds solace and comfort in painting; it relaxes him and lets him experience nature and the fantastic area we all live in.  He also appreciates his growing abilities.

 

This will be his CDABA's first showing of Chris' work.  He would enjoy having comments and input on his work from other artists

 

CDABA has a busy schedule this Fall – other events include:

Octoberfish festival seeks sponsors and vendors

 

Coos Bay, OR - The 7th annual Octoberfish Festival is seeking sponsors, artists, and vendors to help celebrate our coastal community! The family festival features locally produced food, art, music, and sustainable practices. This year, Octoberfish will be celebrated in conjunction with National Estuaries Day, and feature special activities with the South Slough National Estuary Research Reserve. Visit www.orcca.us/Octoberfish for more information on the event.

 

The Octoberfish Planning Committee is seeking sponsors for the event to cover the overhead costs associated with the festival. Sponsorships can be made through donations of cash, goods or services to support the event. Sponsors receive acknowledgement in all PR related to the festival, as well as listings on posters, signs, and announcements throughout the event. It's a great way to spread the word about your business.

 

A variety of sponsorship levels are being sought, including the Tuna BBQ: $400; the Kids BBQ: $200; and the Kid's Activity Corner: $50. Supporters can also become Octoberfish "members" for $25, and will be listed on the ORCCA website as supporters, as well as getting on the guest list for free entry and a free meal. 3 SUMMER READING PROGRAMS @ THE LIBRARY

 

Sign up has begun for kids of all ages at the Reedsport Branch Library.

 

OWN THE NIGHT is the theme for the teenagers, 12 – 18. The bingo card and guessing jar are back and prize drawings include new release books, movie gift cards, and T-shirts. A tie dye class is Thursday, June 28, at 2:00.

 

Dream Big READ! is the theme for elementary age kids. Sign up and receive a book bag and reading log to earn free books and prizes. Look for the surprise on the bulletin board. Artists from Umpqua Valley Arts Association will have programs on Wednesdays at 10:30 on June 20, June 27, and July 11.

 

Dream Big READ! is also the theme for the preschool children, toddlers, and infants. This "read to me" program includes a book bag, a free book, completion reading certificate, and a star for every hour of reading.

Outside Concert at Highland Elementary!

 

What better way to start your summer than to join in on some music and fun in the sun with some of Reedsport's most talented youth? Bring your whole family and join the Music Makers of Highland Elementary, Jeff's Class of Rock, and special guests at the 12th Annual Outside Concert this Wednesday, June 6!

 

The Music Makers program gives students an opportunity to be introduced to the world of music at a young age. Led by Jeff Mason, the music club meets once a week during the school year to rehearse, and every year get a special opportunity to record a CD with a professional musical engineer. The program is one of several after-school opportunities for youth provided by Great Afternoons, a program of Oregon Coast Community Action.

 

Joining the kids on stage will be world famous saxophone and woodwinds performer Paul Biondi. Biondi has composed scores for television and movies, and has played with many of the greatest musical performers in the world including Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, and Aretha Franklin. For the past 12 years, Biondi has contributed his talents to the program and has appeared on all 12 CDs!

 

Joining the students and Biondi on stage are 3 community members have been vital to the program's successes. Dave Christian who has invited classes to his CD studio year after year, Vinnie Cavarra who has recorded and mixed the CDs, and Dr. Robbie Law who has taught bass to students since the program began. 

 

The concert is an opportunity to buy the latest CD and DVD recorded by the Music Makers and Jeff's Class of Rock. CDs will be sold for $5, or a CD/DVD combo can be purchased for $7. All money raised goes towards funding next year's Music Maker program!

 

Oregon Coast Community Action is a non-profit network of programs that help feed, house, warm and educate the communities of the South Coast. Great Afternoons offers daycare service in the Reedsport area and provides resources for parents to better support their families and improve their lives. The Encounter continues!

 

In March of this year Reedsport Foursquare hosted Dr. Ron Kussmaul for several nights of special prophetic services. Many were healed, set free and released into new directions in their lives. God has continued to touch people in the ensuing months, bringing a new expectation of God's grace to bring about change. Beginning Thursday, June 28, Dr. Kussmaul will be back for 4 more days of services and special teaching meetings. Services will be held Thursday (7:00), Friday (7:00), Saturday (6:30) and Sunday (10:00 am) with a special teaching meeting for men and women Saturday from 9-12 am. One hallmark of Dr. Ron's ministry is the powerful moving of the Holy Spirit that is manifest through miracles, healings and the prophetic Word. He has an exceptional anointing to release faith in those who hear him, quickening and equipping them for greater works

 

In April, 1980, Dr. Kussmaul heard God speak to him in an audible voice giving him the following instructions; "Sell what you have, move to South Africa and quicken the body of Christ from the equator to Table Mountain.' In the intervening years, Ron has travelled across 60 nations around the world planting numerous Churches, teaching and preaching the powerful message of Jesus Christ.  He has been a mentor and father to many men and women of God and has an assignment to touch, teach, and impart the Quickening Power of Jesus Christ to the next three generations. Just a quick note to let everyone know that my quilt art group will be having our first group show this month. Over 30 pieces will be on display. There will be pieces called challenge quilts that are based on song titles, use of a certain fabric, misc. other themes, and even on the "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo"book. There will be pieces made from different techniques that we tried as a group (hand dyeing, stamping, etc.), and pieces that were made independently. A very large and impressive variety of work.

The show will be in Elkton at the Butterfly Pavilion Library from June 9th thru the 28th. Open from 10 am to 5 pm daily

Local Art Activities

 

Art Walk - CDABA is busy preparing for its 3rd Annual Art Walk in old
down town Reedsport.  You will be able to visit a number of different
art venues along Highway 38 between Rainbow Plaza and the Orca Gallery
(across from the eagles).  The Mindpower Gallery (417 Fir Avenue) will
have a number of guest artists -- eight jewelry artists -- located
within the Gallery.  Other guests artists scheduled to appear will be
Annie Rains, handmade dolls; Dan Kenagy, photography; George McNair,
paintings; and others.  The ORCA Gallery will have live music by "B
Sharp."  This will be a sidewalk event should the weather
cooperate--if not, look for the guests artists within the local
businesses such as the new popcorn shop (former Thai Restaurant) and
Sherm's Cycle.

 

June First Friday - Artist Kathleen Olsson's work can still be seen at
the Reedsport Natural Foods store at 1891 Winchester Avenue (Highway
101).  If you missed the show be sure to make a point of going by and
admiring Kathleen's talent.  Kathleen's work will be on display for a
few weeks.

 

July First Friday - the July 6th First Friday will be hosted by Tom
and MaryAnn Castaneda at the Rusty Frog Gallery, between 5-7 pm at
75331 Highway 101, Winchester Bay, OR  97467 (3 miles South of
Reedsport).  During this First Friday event you can visit with Tom
Castaneda about the wood sculptures he creates with a chainsaw.
Examples of what he will be displaying include Eagles, Bears, Fish,
Totem Poles, Pelicans and many other items.  You will be able to also
enjoy the many wood benches of Horses, Elk and Bears.

 

Art donations - CDABA is again seeking donations of art. CDABA accepts
donations of art to help support its programs. All kinds of art are
being sought-- whether it is an original, new piece of art or a piece
of art that is looking for a new home. The art can be any type of art,
paintings, drawings, sculptures, printmaking, photography, jewelry,
etc. The proceeds from the sales of the art pieces will go to benefit
the various community projects CDABA sponsors, including the First
Friday . . . Art for Everyone events, the Art Academy-art classes, and
the Confluence Fountain.  Anyone interested in donating a piece of art
should contact Tamara Szalewski at the Mindpower Gallery (271-2485)

 

Donations to maintain the Confluence Fountain or to assist with the
fundraising to replace the lighting panels at the Pacific Auditorium
are also being sought.  Anyone interested in keeping these two
community icons going can make their tax deductible contribution by
mailing it to CDABA at PO Box 5, Reedsport, OR  97467 or contact
Kathleen Miller (271-2101) to make arrangements for the donation.
CDABA is a local nonprofit and donations to CDABA are tax-deductible
to the extent allowed by law and every donor should consult with his
or her tax accountant.

MEMORIES—1962 COLUMBUS DAY STORM

"I was a sophomore at Junction City high school and school let out around noon, but I didn't know why. I
went with some friends to Eugene to goof off and soon realized a storm was coming. My friends dropped
me off at Hwy 99 and 36 and I had a 14 mile walk home. The winds became stronger and stronger and I
had to lean horizontally into the wind to make any headway. When the wind stopped—I would fall forward.
I could not take a shortcut through the heavy timber because of falling trees. At one point, a barn
ahead of me imploded and was blown across the road in front of me. My father was a logger and for many
years after the storm made a living from logging the downed timber. I helped during the summer, and it
was dangerous work because of the way the storm fell the timber - like 'pick-up sticks'. It was interesting
the way the storm blew down strips of timber up to a quarter mile wide, but left other stands upright."

The Center is interested in hearing what you remember from the 1962 Columbus Day Storm. E-mail your

featured in future newsletters and on the website. In October we will have a special history program on the
storm to mark the 50th Anniversary
