PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION   #1 of 4
Stanley Bates, co-creator of Christmas in July, has passed away at 91 years of age on May 31st this year.
He earned a Reedsport Community Service Award in 2006. Stan volunteered with the Reedsport Food Bank, Cub Scouts and many other interests, as well as beginning a book club with his wife, Betty, participating in a peace action group and of course organizing Christmas in July. In its eight years the event and volunteers serve the community with the mission "to preserve and revitalize houses in our community, assuring that low income homeowners from elderly and disabled to needy families with children, live in warmth and safety. In partnership with the community, our aim is to make a sustainable impact."
Carlyine Ritter offered this comment about Stan:  "To me, he was a genuine hero. I remember when I was working at the Family Resource Center he was marketing the idea of Christmas in July, and I thought it was brilliant.  It was a little slow getting started and I was worried it wouldn't catch on, but he quietly continued to promote it and, of course, after the first year, everyone knew it was a wonderful thing he'd brought to people in the Reedsport community.  I don't know how many people remember, or ever knew, how instrumental he was in getting it started. I suspect there are other many such things he's responsible for.
He and his wife were the ones who got our book club started at the public library and I so enjoyed meeting with them every month (and still enjoy the book club).  They were interesting and great fun to be around.  While they were living in Reedsport, they were great assets to the entire community."
If anyone wishes to honor Stan's memory the family has asked that donations please be made to Christmas in July. Either at the Umpqua Bank Reedsport branch or care of Church of God who maintain the event:
2191 Birch Ave
Reedsport, OR 97467

Stan lived in Bothell, Washington, with wife Betty who still has the support of good neighbors and a very dedicated daughter in town. Betty also has a daughter in Arizona, a son in Hawaii and daughter Heather Vail with husband Ron are in New Zealand.
Here is a favorite quote of Stan's, which he kept in his wallet, and handed out to those he thought might be interested:  Blessed are those who give without remembering and blessed are those who receive without forgetting." - Stanley Albert Bates, born London, England, 28 May 1923.

Shoe Drive drawing to a close.
This is the last week for getting your shoes into the Foursquare Church used shoe drive. Final collections will be next week through Wednesday the 18th. So far over 1775 pairs of shoes have been collected for use in developing countries. "The first batch of shoes have gone to Chile," states Pastor Terry Plotz. "We're not sure where the rest will go."
Through the shoe drive, the church has also raised over $500 toward housing at a new clinic in Honduras where two Reedsport families are working. They are hoping to collect a few hundred more shoes to get that total a little higher. If you still want to donate, drop your shoes off at the church, Les Schwab in Reedsport, or call the church to come by and pick up your used shoes. The church is located at 2900 Frontage Rd. Phone number is 541-271-4414.
