Dune Classic Volleyball Tournament
set for September 8
REEDSPORT The 23rd annual Dune Classic Volleyball Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, September 8, in the gymnasiums at Reedsport Community Charter School.
Eight area high school teams will be participating in the pool-play event, which begins at 10:00 a.m. Pool "A" includes Reedsport, Pacific, Glide and Yoncalla. Pool "B" includes North Douglas, Oakland, Coquille and defending-champion Siuslaw.
"Once again this year, there seems to be a lot of excitement in the air surrounding our area volleyball teams," said Joe Zelinski of the Reedsport Braves Boosters Association, which presents the annual event as a fundraiser for the organization. "Our early-season tournament is a great way for these teams to start their seasons." Zelinski added of the host Reedsport Braves, "Our girls came up just short of winning this tournament and the state 2A championship last year. They will be a strong team once again, and it should be a lot of fun to see what unfolds this year."
The top two teams from each pool advance to the semi-finals matches, which are played simultaneously, and usually start at approximately 4:00 p.m. Winners advance to the championship match, which begins at approximately 5:15 p.m.
"I'm always surprised at the level of competition at this tournament, especially for this early in the season," Zelinski added. "It is an excellent opportunity for the teams to have a day-long session of skill-building, rotation adjustments, and physical conditioning, as each school prepares for its regular season."
All-day admission to the event is $4.00 and $3.00 for students and senior citizens. The Braves Boosters will also be operating an expanded grill and concessions service, at the rear breezeway outside the RCCS gymnasiums.
The Boosters are seeking volunteers to help administer the tournament. Anyone who can spare a few hours on Saturday, September 10 is encouraged to contact Joe Zelinski at 541-999-6947.
