The Spring Pops concert of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO) will close the orchestra's third season of presenting live orchestral music in Reedsport. The concert will be a matinee on Sunday, May 16 at 2 P.M. in the Pacific Auditorium. The special two-for-one "early-bird" ticket price is again being offered. A General Admission ticket ($10.00) admits two persons. Tickets are currently available at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank. The ticket price on the day of the event will be $10.00 per person.
 
Refreshments will be available for purchase in the lobby at intermission. A combo including featured soloists and members of the orchestra will be entertaining in the lobby area during this interval.
 
The concert itself contains a variety of light music, including two originals by Charles Perkins and Robin DeVour's Latin Suite, a group of five Latin-American dances. Three of Perkins' arrangements are also on tap in the second half of the program. "Fever" and "I love Paris" are arranged as vocals by Perkins for Denise Dee with Ron Green improvising on trumpet. Green will solo on Perkins arrangement of "Melancholy Serenade."

Bradley Vineyards - Featured Winery

 

Bradley Vineyards of Elkton, OR is to be the featured winery at CDABA's First Friday . . . Art for Everyone event this Friday, May 7th at the Reedsport Natural Food Store.  The location of Bradley Vineyards boasts ideal soil and weather conditions for growing pinot noir, gewürztraminer and riesling grapes.  Their vines were planted in 1983 and now cover over 25 acres.  All of their wines are made from estate grown grapes and include some award winning wines, such as Gold Medal '04 Pinot, Silver Medal '03 Pinot and Gold Medal '05 Baco Noir.  Bradley Vineyards also has a tasting room which is open to the public.  Summer Hours are Wed - Sun 11:00 - 5:00 or by appointment.  Bradley Vineyards will be conducting a free wine tasting and will be selling its wine by the glass and the bottle.

 

And of course---don't forget the art.  This First Friday event will feature the students from the Reedsport Community Charter School.  Students from the woodworking and art classes will be the featured artists.  The woodworking students plan to sell things they have made to help support their program.  For sale will be wooden toys, Salmon coat hooks and clocks.  They also plan to have wooden bowls for door prizes.  One student will also be demonstrating a table lathe and making tops and yo-yos to give away.  And that's not all---students from Mrs. Tymchuk's Lifestyles class will be making the finger foods to go along with the wine tasting featuring Bradley Vineyards.

 CDABA Announces Artist Fair

 

As a part of its recent promotions of the arts, CDABA will be sponsoring an Artist Fair to be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.  The Artist Fair will be held on the grounds of the Reedsport Coffeehouse, 2285 Longwood Drive, Reedsport, OR  97467.

 

 Artist who would like to have a display booth may submit an application together with the $25.00 to CDABA at PO Box 5, Reedsport, OR  97467.  Artists may pick up an application from the Reedsport Coffeehouse or by contacting Kathleen Miller at kkmiller@reedsportlaw.com. 

 

Guidelines for participation include:

 

            Space fee of $25.00 is due with submission of application.  Event will be held rain or shine.  Application fee will not be refunded in the event of rain.  Fee will be refunded only in the event application is not accepted or space is unavailable. 

 

Only space (appx 10 x 10) will be provided.  No amenities to be provided (i.e. no running water, no electricity provided).

 

Location is the Reedsport Coffeehouse—spaces will be on the grass and the ground is uneven.

 

            Artist applications will be considered on a first to be received basis and based upon appropriateness for Artist Fair and a well rounded art show.

 

Artist to provide for all of his/her own needs---such as table, chairs, etc.

 

Space availability will be determined by date application is received and accepted.

Pink Flamingos in Reedsport?   A flock of these birds has strayed from their native habitat and are heading to Reedsport.  You may soon see the flock in a yard near you!  The youth group of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church is raising funds so that they can attend the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans in July.  You may request the birds be put in a specific person's yard – for the low price of $10. Keep an eye out for these fluorescent birds, for they may soon be coming to a yard near you. The community is invited to an open house featuring products from Pampered Chef, Stampin' Up!, PartyLite, and Cookie Lee.  The Open House will be held at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 2160 Elm, on Saturday, May 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The event is a fundraiser for the youth of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, who are raising funds to attend the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans this coming July. 

 

Cooking demonstrations by the Pampered Chef consultant will take place at 10:30 and noon. Kitchen products from Pampered Chef, stamping and scrapbooking supplies from Stampin' Up!, candles from PartyLite, and jewelry from Cookie Lee will be displayed and available for purchase from their consultants.  Refreshments, door prizes, and a raffle will be included in the event.

Memorial Day Fundraiser to help the Library

 

Be prepared with your dollar bills on the parade route during the Memorial Day festivities on May 31.The Library Renovation Project Fundraising Team will be selling patriotic memorabilia to help raise funds for the upgrades and repairs being made at the Reedsport Branch Library.

 

Volunteers will be selling balloons and American flags for $1 each. To hold your gear, canvas backpacks with Umpqua Bank water bottles will also be sold along the route located in Old Town Reedsport.

 

During the Memorial Day Parade, , volunteers in costume will walk in the parade route in an effort to increase awareness of the Reedsport Branch Library renovation project. Members of The Friends of the Library, Library Renovation Project Fundraising Team and local children have combined forces for this May 31 event on Fir Avenue hosted by the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce.

Library Receives Grants for Renovation Project

 

Grant funds keep coming in for the Reedsport Branch Library's renovation project. Upgrades and repairs are progressing on this $350,000 community project.

 

The Library Renovation Committee Grant Team has been successful with a $22,000 grant from The Whipple Foundation for new and replacement windows and a $50,000 grant from The Ford Family Foundation for exterior siding.

 

The Whipple Foundation grant, submitted through the City of Reedsport, will provide new and replacement energy efficient windows. New windows will be installed on the south and east sides of the building. The Ford Family Foundation grant, also submitted through the City of Reedsport, is for exterior siding. These are the matching dollars for a USDA Community Development Block Grant that must be in place for the government to consider our proposal.  If the Community Development Block Grant is received, all funding needed to replace the exterior siding for the entire Library building will be in place. 

 

Several upgrades and repairs were completed in March with $5,000 in grants, received in 2009, Grant money received from C Giles Hunt and The Bank of America Foundation was used to address American with Disabilities Act standards and install energy efficient lighting. Repairs to the west entrance landing, installation of an ADA compliant handrail and an update of the restroom has brought the building into ADA compliance.  The energy efficient lighting upgrades throughout the entire building was also completed.  The City of Reedsport has submitted an application for an energy tax credit for the newly installed energy efficient lighting. 

 

Additional grant funds are being sought for replacement of the Solarium.  One funding is secured for the Solarium. Phases One and Two of the Library Renovation Project will be fully funded by local donations and grants. 

 

The Library Renovation Project Grant Team is expecting to receive additional grant notifications in June. Funds raised this year by the Library Renovation Project Fundraising Team total $3,925. The next fundraiser will be held during the parade on Memorial Day in Reedsport.

The Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring a Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service to honor veterans.  Leading the parade taking place on Memorial Day at noon will be the United States Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Marching Band from 29 Palms, California.  The theme for this years parade is "Honoring Veterans, Past, Present and Future". The parade will originate on Highway 38 at Waterfront Way in Old Towne Reedsport and travel West to East Railroad Avenue and conclude at Hahn Park.  Many Veterans will participate in the parade including World War II survivors from the Oregon Chapter of Land Ship Tanks (LST).

 

Following the parade, the Chamber, in partnership with the Gardiner/Reedsport Lions, will be serving a Community BBQ at Hahn Park for $5.00 per person to help raise funds to offset the cost associated with bringing the Marines to our Community.  A Memorial Service honoring our veterans will follow.  Jamie Lynn will skydive into the Memorial site with a 65 foot by 35 foot American Flag.  The 29 Palms Marine Corps Band will perform during the ceremony along with the students from Highland Elementary School.

 

 On Sunday, May 30th the 29 Palms Marine Corps Band will perform at the Reedsport High School Auditorium.  Due to limited seating, free tickets will be required for this concert.  Free tickets for the concert are available at the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce, Bank of America, and Umpqua Bank and will be on a first come basis.

DCCC receives its funds from the Oregon Cultural Trust and regrants the funds to various art, heritage and humanity groups in Douglas County.  Last year the coalition received approximately $14,000.  Usually the grants are in the amounts of between $250 and $1,000 and are geographically spread throughout the county.  

Oregon Cultural Trust receives its funds from the sale of the license plates and through donations.  The state has a tax credit program which permits a resident to direct funds to the cultural trust under certain conditions.

DCCC, a local volunteer organization, aims to support cultural participation in the county as inclusively as possible. The organization seeks to reflect the needs and desires of people, places and cultural interests within the county. Distributed funds will support ethnic cultures in the county and the promotion of unity and the celebration of diversity.

 

In the current cycle, particular emphasis is placed on these cultural activities.

 

• Heritage-related and humanities-related applications provide publicity, information and education to raise the profile of programs and organizations.

• Heritage projects build community involvement in cultural diversity.

• Humanities projects address communication and civil discourse.

• Arts projects mentor young people interested in theater so they might have hands-on experience in the various components of staging theatrical productions.

Jazz trumpeter joins orchestra in Spring Pops concert

Jazz trumpeter, Ron Green will join with 40 other musicians in the Spring Pops concert of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO). Green will be featured with Vocalist Denise Dee and new works by coastal composers Charles Perkins and Robin DeVour. The Reedsport concert is a matinee on Sunday, May 16 at 2 P.M. in the Pacific Auditorium. The special two-for-one "early-bird" ticket price is again being offered. Ron Green has been playing trumpet professionally for 24 years. The majority of his musical life was spent in Portland, Oregon where he performed primarily in the genre of straight ahead jazz, big band and commercial productions. He has performed as a backup musician for The Temptations, Pat Boone, Dizzy Gillespie, Etta James, Doc Severinsen and the Portland Opera Orchestra. Ron was lead trumpet for The Kicks Band and spent 10 years performing with the Latin Jazz Ensemble "Conjunto Alegre".
 
Ron and his wife Catherine settled in Florence in 2007 where he holds the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer for Oregon Pacific Bank. He is a graduate of the Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington.
 
A half hour before concert start time, DeVour will speak briefly about the music to be presented. Furthermore, in the lobby at intermission, a combo consisting of Dee, trumpeter Ron Green and a rhythm section of pianist DeVour, bassist Ken Mace and drummer Mike Swain will play a short set.

Local member Ike Launstein earned Third Place honors in the Evaluation Contest. In the International Speech Contest, Kent Abendroth also of the Coast Toasties Club took Second Place for his speech 'Mrs. Murrow.'

Worldwide Free Comic Book Day Comes to Florence with Comics for All Ages!

 

She Said Gifts He Said Comics in Florence is one of thousands of comic book shops around the world celebrating the comic book art form on Saturday, May 1st. On Free Comic Book Day, over two million comic books will be given away by participating stores, introducing as many people as possible to the wonders of comic books!

 

 "The wide array of comic books being published today ensures that readers of all ages — children, teens, and adults – can find something appropriate that will stir their imaginations," said Ron Schmidt, co-owner of She Said Gifts He Said Comics. 

 

Now in its ninth year, Free Comic Book Day has proven to be a smashing success, spreading the word that comics are terrific reading. "Even if you have never picked up a comic book, stop into She Said Gifts He Said Comics, because you never know what you will end up finding."

 

"We at She Said Gifts He Said Comics want to spread the word that comics are perfect for today's times," Schmidt continued. "Comic books and graphic novels are considered hip, hot and smart." Comic Books have propelled to the front ranks of pop culture, many being adapted into movies. IRON MAN 2 hits the big screen on May 7th, the week following Free Comic Book Day. The first weekend of May is going to be a big day in the comic book world. And May 1 is just one week short of She Said Gifts He Said Comics second anniversary in business, so they will have some bargains to celebrate that event as well."
"This year we will have a special guest.  From 1:30 pm to 5pm, retired Disney Animator Chuck Harvey (Rescuers, Pete's Dragon, The Little Mermaid, The Tick and many more) will be in-house to discuss cartoon animation and (for a small fee) will draw caricatures of you or your loved ones," added Schmidt.

This is a Memorial Day Celebration donation program that enables you to Adopt-A-Marine to help support the patriotic recognition of this honorable holiday. A Memorial Day Benefit Mystery Dinner Theater to support The Memorial Day Celebration will be held June 26th at the Reedsport Community Building.

Lower Umpqua Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of its newly created Beacon Award. The Beacon Award was established this year by the Foundation to recognize the voluntary efforts of local individuals and organizations to improve the health, wellness, and safety of individuals in our community.

 

            Umpqua Bank and its staff are a recipient of the Beacon Award for their commitment to these efforts by their ongoing support of several different programs both individually and as an organization. By hosting a Valentine's Day Bake Sale, bank employees support local food banks and other food supplement programs. The bank's "Grandma's Closet" helps meet the clothing needs for children in our schools. Bank staff volunteer for South Coast Special Olympics, Project Blessing Food Bank, Lower Umpqua Senior Center meal program. Our community is much richer with these great individuals and the support of Umpqua Bank in their efforts.

 

            Katie Vasquez is a second recipient of the Beacon Award. Katie has been voluntarily leading an aqua aerobics class at Highland Pool two evenings a week for several years. Many in the community have benefited from her experience, enthusiasm, and dedication to this program. Her expertise as a physical therapist and knowledge of how a body's muscles work allow her to tailor the class so that participants get the greatest benefit from their efforts.

 

            A reception to honor Umpqua Bank & Staff and Katie Vasquez will be held Monday, May 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Lower Umpqua Hospital conference room. At that time, each will receive a check for $100 to benefit a local program of their choosing.

 

            Says Mary Ann Wells, Vice Chair of the Lower Umpqua Hospital Foundation, "We think these two recipients are excellent choices for the Beacon Award. Their selfless efforts have made a big impact on our community."

Posters are to be judged on originality, creativity and the POSITIVE reasons to be tobacco free

 

            These posters wrap up an annual "Tar Wars" unit that promotes being healthy and tobacco free and includes classroom presentations by Dr. Janet Patin and Dr. Robbie Law, Family Physicians at Dunes Family Health Care.

Students to be Featured during First Friday

 

The Friday, May 7th First Friday event will feature students from the Reedsport Community Charter School.  Students from the woodworking and art classes will be the featured artists.  The woodworking students plan to sell things they have made to help support their program.  For sale will be wooden toys, Salmon coat hooks and clocks.  They also plan to have wooden bowls for door prizes.  One student will also be demonstrating a table lathe and making tops and yo-yos to give away.   The art students, led by Kyle Mulligan will also have art on display.

 

And that's not all, students from Mrs. Tymchuk's Lifestyles class will be making the finger foods to go along with the wine tasting featuring Bradley Vineyards.

Denise Dee, talented Florence jazz singer, makes her second appearance in as many years in the Spring Pops concert of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO). Selections by coastal composers Charles Perkins and Robin DeVour are also featured in the program. The Reedsport concert is a matinee on Sunday, May 16 at 2 P.M. in the Pacific Auditorium. The special two-for-one "early-bird" ticket price is again being offered. A General Admission ticket ($10.00) admits two persons. Tickets are currently available at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank. The ticket price on the day of the event will be $10.00 per person.
 
Dee is the daughter of a singer. Her late mother was a vocalist in the 1940s and Dee grew up listening to jazz standards, swing tunes and torch songs. Although she began her interest in singing with Rock and Roll she soon moved on to Jazz. Though she has lived on the Oregon coast for little more than a year, she has appeared with many local groups including the Juke Box Kings and the Helmsmen. This is her second occasion as a featured soloist with OCCO.
 
A half hour before concert start time, DeVour will speak briefly about the music to be presented. Furthermore, in the lobby at intermission, a combo consisting of Dee, trumpeter Ron Green and a rhythm section of pianist DeVour, bassist Ken Mace and drummer Mike Swain will play a short set.
 
The concert itself contains a variety of light music, including two originals by Perkins and DeVour's Latin Suite, a group of five Latin-American dances. Three of Perkins' arrangements are also on tap in the second half of the program. "Fever" and "I love Paris" are arranged by Perkins as vocals for Dee with Green improvising on trumpet.

Southern Oregon Coast wins big at the Governor's Conference on Tourism

 

South Coast, OR -  The Southern Oregon Coast Partnership received one of the industry's highest honors at the Oregon Governor's Conference on Tourism on Sunday evening when the Oregon Tourism Commission (dba Travel Oregon) presented them with the  prestigious Oregon Tourism & Hospitality Exceptional Partnership Award.

 

The Southern Oregon Partnership consists of Destination Marketing Organization's (DMO's) from Brookings to Reedsport. The Partnership was formed last year and started out with a bang by receiving a $10,000 matching grant from Travel Oregon to assist with a multi-faceted promotional campaign. Their marketing efforts included traditional media along with a new website, facebook page, and blog postings. According to Robin Dollar, Manager of the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce, "This partnership is about more than just advertising, it is about working together to benefit our entire coastal region and recognizing that together we are stronger than we are individually. We're all extremely excited and grateful that Travel Oregon found it award worthy."

 

The Partnership Award from Travel Oregon recognizes a group of Oregon tourism and hospitality industry organizations which have collaborated to create and promote a successful tourism program, promotion, or product which is more successful than any single entity could have produced alone.

 

The DMO's included in the partnership are Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Gold Beach Promotions & Visitor Center, Port Orford & North Curry County Chamber of Commerce, Bandon Chamber of Commerce, Coos Bay – North Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau, Lakeside Chamber of Commerce and the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce.

 

Another big winner for the South Coast was Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. They were honored with the Oregon Sustainable Tourism Leadership Award. The sustainability award recognizes an individual's outstanding leadership, stewardship, and socially responsible practices as demonstrated by a strong commitment to decreasing the environmental impact of the tourism and hospitality industry.

Coast Toasties standouts Kent Abendroth and Ike Launstein will compete at the Toastmasters' Divisional contests in Florence on April 24.

 

The public is invited to attend this event hosted by Area 34 Governor James Perry at the Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue Station located at the corner of Highway 101 and 26th  Avenue at 10am. Refreshments will be served during a question and answer session with the competitors immediately following the contests.

 

Abendroth, who won the Area 34 International Speech Contest, will compete against several winners from clubs throughout the district with his speech 'Mrs. Murrow.'

 

Launstein will compete in the Evaluation Contest against several district opponents. He will be judged on his ability to give supportive feedback during a three to five minute evaluation of a test speech given by a member of Florence's Tail Spinners club.

A grassroots campaign to save the Fresnel lens at the Umpqua River Lighthouse has requested that the community make their voices heard by submitting boater surveys and letters to the U.S. Coast Guard in Seattle, Washington.

Advocate Sherri Elliott of the Copy Cat is offering to fax boater surveys  and comments regarding the Coast Guard's Waterways Analysis and Management System study before the deadline of the end of tomorrow, Friday April 16.

Boaters are encouraged to pick up the survey at the Copy Cat, Umpqua Bank, Salmon Harbor Marina or K-DUNE Radio. Completed surveys may be faxed to 206-220-7265 before 5pm on Friday, April 16. These surveys may also be faxed from the Copy Cat for free on the same date before 3pm.

Letters of concern about why the light ought to be maintained at its current location may also be submitted via fax to ENS Daniel Park, USCG in Seattle and either fax it to him at 206-220-7283 or email at Daniel.H.Park@uscg.mil . They may also be faxed at the Copy Cat for free as listed above.

A previous survey completed in 2009 by recreational and commercial boaters will not impact the results of the current survey offered by the Coast Guard. It has been alleged that the previous surveys have been lost. The summary report, which can be obtained by submitting a Freedom of Information Act request, noted that the light was not used as a primary aid to navigation to the majority of boaters in the Pacific Ocean off Winchester Bay.

According to Elliott, the lens is a "treasure we have with the only operational beacon of its kind located in the United States and there         have been multiple efforts over the years to protect and 'partner' with the Federal Government to maintain and preserve this piece of our history."

The Lower Umpqua Economic Development Forum has joined in the effort to preserve the First Order Fresnel lens at the Umpqua River Lighthouse due to its economic and historical significance to Coastal Douglas County.  The Lighthouse and coastal museum receives 10,000 visitors each year. "The lighthouse and museum brings revenue sorely needed by local businesses through tourism. Tourism remains the number one economic driver in our community," said Theresa Hart chair of the Lower Umpqua Development Forum.

The non-profit organization is writing letters to Senator Ron Widen and State Representative Jeff Merkeley urging them to put pressure on the Coast Guard to preserve the light at the Umpqua River Lighthouse.
According to Elliott, Salmon Harbor Master sent letters and surveys to all moorage customers with the statement 'It is the position that the Umpqua Lighthouse and ALL existing navigational aids for the Umpqua River waterway are essential to mariners and should not be changed or modified.'

Suggested Headline: Pops Concert ends orchestra's ninth season

Music of Florence composers, Charles Perkins and Robin DeVour, will be premiered in the Spring Pops concert of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO). Singer Denise Dee and trumpeter Ron Green will also be featured in the program.

The Reedsport concert will be a matinee on Sunday, May 16 at 2 P.M. in the Pacific Auditorium. The special two-for-one "early-bird" ticket price will again be offered. A General Admission ticket ($10.00) will admit two persons. Tickets are currently available at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank. The ticket price on the day of the event will be $10.00 per person.

The concert will begin with a variety of light music, selections including two originals by Perkins and a suite of Latin-American dances by DeVour. Three of Perkins' arrangements are also on tap in the second half of the program. Two of them are arranged as vocals for Dee with Green improvising on trumpet. Conductors for this concert are DeVour, Steve Conaton, John Monks and John Dodge. Concertmaster of OCCO is Barbara Wilcox.

 Daniel Burgess to be featured artist at Third Friday – Artist Showcase

 

Daniel Burgess to be featured artist at Third Friday – Artist Showcase.  Daniel is a sculptor who works in metal and driftwood.  Daniel describes his art as an abstract collaboration with nature.  He uses animals and his surroundings as references.  Daniel's metal sculptures are unique and distinctive.  He plans to display a Pegasus Horse, a Wooden Rhino, and a Humpback Whale.

On Tuesday April 20th from 5-9 pm, Bedrock's Reedsport will celebrate 10 years in business. The celebration will kick off with "Bedrock's Pizza Eating Contest" that evening. Reedsport winners of the recent Toastmasters Area Contests will face the next set of challengers at the Central Division Contests on April 24. Coast Toasties members Kent Abendroth and Ike Launstein will represent Area 34 at the upcoming contest in Florence.

 

Kent Abendroth, who won the International Speech contest in the Area 34 Competition last Saturday, beat out three other contestants for the first place win with his speech 'Mrs. Murrow.'

 

Abendroth was impressed by the supportive group that participated in the contest hosted by the Florence Talespinners Toastmasters club. "It was a very open group…They were non-threatening."

 

Ike Launstein took first place in the Evaluation Contest over three competitors from Area 34. Launstein was judged on the evaluation he gave for a speech given by Florence Talespinner Tony Bishop.

 

"I learned a lot from the experience. I would really recommend that everyone attend these contests," said Launstein of his experience, "You'll pick up some good tips."

 

The public is invited to attend the Central Division Contests on Saturday, April 24 at the Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue Station located on Highway 101 at 26th Street in Florence. The contest will begin at 10am, and refreshments will be served.

 

Abendroth and Launstein are members of the Reedsport Coast Toasties Toastmasters Club that meets on Tuesdays from 7pm to 8pm at the Reedsport School District office on Ranch Road. On Thursday, April 22, The Umpqua Discovery Center will present the second in their series of programs examining the history of Reedsport Athletics.  This program will focus on the years 1950-1959.  Following programs will look at the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.

 

The decade of the 1950's saw the formation of the Coast League with Taft, Newport, Toledo, Florence, Reedsport and Waldport.  The Boys Basketball program won the league championship every year between 1950-1955.  The Boys Football program went to the state playoffs each year between 1955 and 1957 and won the state championship in football behind legendary coach Rudy Ruppe in 1957.

 

Information on some of these years is sketchy at best, so the Discovery Center is looking for anyone with high school annuals in the years 1950, 1953, 1954 and 1959.  If you have one of these books, please contact Jim Akre at 541-271-4255 or email akre@charter.net to help flesh out this program.  You are also invited to bring these missing yearbooks plus any pictures to the presentation on April 22.

 

The one-hour program begins at 6:30 pm on April 22 at the Discovery Center.  There is limited seating, with the first 50 people being assured seats.  Admission is $2.50 for adults, $1 for children ages 6-15, and UDC members are free.

Final Results for the St. Patrick's Day Trivia Challenge Pub Crawl

 

The results are in for the recent St. Patrick's Day Trivia Challenge Pub Crawl event.  A total of 105 persons participated in this fundraiser that provided an evening of fun and donations for the Reedsport Branch Library Renovation Project. Including expenses, a total of $2,558 was raised on March 17. A list of the participants of the top five Trivia Challenge teams answering the most questions correctly is now available at the Reedsport Branch Library.

 

In order of placement, the following teams beat out the 17 teams that participated in the latest fundraiser to benefit the Reedsport Branch Library Renovation Project:

The Reedsport Branch Library Renovation Project is a community-based effort made up of representatives from the Reedsport Branch Library, Coastal Douglas Arts & Business Alliance, Friends of the Reedsport Library, the City of Reedsport and individual community members. Their next fundraiser will occur during the Memorial Day Weekend Celebration.

 

Ongoing fundraising include the purchase of "book spines," for a donation of $100 or more, which are being sold at the Reedsport Branch Library. The donors' names are inscribed on the "spines" and then hung on display at the Reedsport Branch Library.

The Old Towne Reedsport Merchant Association is having their 3rd Annual Hanging Basket Planting Party on Saturday, May 1st in Old Towne Reedsport.

 The goal is to plant 70 huge beautiful baskets to hang from the light poles downtown.  In addition to the planting, the festivities include annual flowers and herbs for sale.  There will also be hot dogs and lemonade for sale, a raffle for flower and herb baskets, and the continued sale of the "Coastal Community Cookbook" to raise money for the basket project maintenance and its continued success.  Samples from some of the recipes in the cookbook will be available.
