Lake Marie Free Fishing Day

When: Sunday, June 7^th , starting at 9:00 AM and ending at 1:00 PM

Where: Lake Marie, Umpqua Lighthouse State Park

Who: Specifically, for children fourteen and under, but free fishing day is for all.

Registered children will participate in a tackle raffle, casting contest, a free hot dog and pop provided by the U.S. Forestry Service.

Help: Experienced anglers from the South Coast Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association of Oregon will be available to assist youngsters. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Gardiner, Reedsport, Winchester Bay STEP will provide fishing poles and bait at no cost.

Access: The South Coast Chapter of CCA, Oregon with assistance from the Oregon Parks and Management Department cleared enough shoreline brush and debris, so that everyone will have a place to fish.

Fish: Lake Marie was just stocked by ODF&W with trout in preparation for this event. They will certainly be hungry and waiting for you!

Please bring your children and join us at Lake Marie on June 7^th for a fun day of free fishing. There will be lots of people there for the sole purpose to help you and your children have great time.

Lake Marie, Clearing the Way

We started the Lake Marie shore line clean-up at 9:00 AM on Monday, May 18^th. The South Coast Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association, Oregon participants included OJ Cortez, His son Evan, Shane Sejera, Harold Ettelt, Joan Godin and Steve Godin. Radeena Lee, Park Manager, provided Park Volunteer assistance and equipment to haul the trimmings and debris to a remote location.

The objective of this project was to increase shoreline fishing access along Lake Marie. Timing was driven by Memorial Day visitors and Oregon Free Fishing Days (no Oregon Fishing License required), June 6th and 7^th. Lake Marie is a beautiful lake surrounded by tall timber with easy access from the Umpqua Lighthouse State Park and roadway. It is stocked with trout periodically by ODF&W and will receive a fresh plant of trout, just prior to free fishing days.

We started on the East side of the beach and worked East. Much shoreline vegetation was removed, as well as considerable in water woody debris. Fishing access along the North East side of Lake Marie was increased by more than 150%! Large trees were not removed and there are some whoppers still in the water to get tangled up in. We did remove a considerable amount of fishing line and lead sinkers from the lake. Lucky volunteers got to keep some very well preserved fishing lures!

So, the South Coast Chapter, CCA, Oregon and Park Volunteers cleared the way. Everyone who has had a desire to try fishing young and old, should go to Lake Marie on Sunday, June 7^th for a Free Fishing Day. ODF&W will be at the lake, along with Forestry Service, Gardiner, Reedsport, Winchester Bay STEP, and the South Coast Chapter to help you have a fantastic -time, enjoying the day and fishing.

Salmon Fin Clipping - Call for Volunteers

The Gardiner, Reedsport Winchester Bay STEP Hatchery will be clipping Fall Chinook Salmon at the Gardiner Hatchery on April 27, 28, 29, May 1 and possibly May 2. Thursday, April 30th the Reedsport High School students will be helping out. These salmon will be released in Winchester Bay and will contribute to a fantastic fishery in a few years. There are over 100,000 Chinook Fingerlings to be clipped, and your help is needed. The Gardiner Hatchery is operated and maintained all year every year, and this is the only time that they ask for volunteer help. I will be there to help, and I request that all of our chapter members as well as anyone from the general public help out. Clipping will start at around 9:00 AM and will continue with a few breaks until approximately 3:00 PM. The area designated for clipping is under cover and chairs are available for all engaged in clipping. An ODF&W representative will be on-site to train volunteers regarding best clipping techniques. It is not difficult to clip salmon, it just takes a lot of time to clip 100,000 fish! Even if you can’t be available for a whole day, any number of hours that you can contribute will help out. The Gardiner Hatchery is located between the Smith River Bridge and the Town of Gardiner. It is located on the right side of Route 101, look for the hatchery sign. We will spend an hour and a half along the east side of the two ponds, mostly looking at waterfowl, but other birds will be around as well. I expect 6 or more species of ducks, as well as Pied-billed Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant, and possibly Wilson's Snipe. Western Bluebirds, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Yellow-rumped Warblers are often around. This will be a good time for new birders who are just beginning to learn different species of ducks and other water birds, but all skill levels are welcome. Ford's Pond is filling up! We will walk around the east and north sides of the pond, looking in the brush for songbirds, on the water for waterbirds, and the skies and trees for raptors. Bald Eagles and Peregrine Falcons are sometimes attracted to the concentrations of waterfowl. Bring binoculars, a scope, and a field guide if you have them. Meet at 1000 along the gravel shoulder on the west side of Church Rd. The road around the pond is often muddy, so boots are recommended. Questions? CDABA (Coastal Douglas Arts and Business Alliance) is once again sponsoring classes, demonstrations, and other art and business related activities through its Art Academy.

Each class has a minimum number of students required in order for the class to take place so please register early.
 
CREATIVE WRITING:
Instructor and English teacher Alexis Parrick will guide students through the creative writing process by issuing various challenges to encourage students to produce a short story each week. Assistance with technical writing skills, as well as good story telling, will be shared. Classes will be held every Monday at the Reedsport Public Library, 395 Winchester Ave. beginning March 16th and running through April 27th, 4:30 - 5:30 pm. One time registration fee of $5 and $10 per class. Participate in all class or as desired.
 
PAPER CRAFT:
Play with paper and misc. craft supplies once a week in these fun and creative classes. Instructor Alexis Parrick will offer a different project each week. Examples include origami and masks. Suitable for children 10 and older, as well as adults, and all skill levels. This would be an especially good class for families. Children younger then 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Bring your own supplies or purchase a kit from Alexis.  Classes will be held every Friday at the Reedsport Public Library, 395 Winchester Ave. beginning March 20th and running through May 1st, 4:30 - 5:30 pm. One time $5 registration fee and $5 per class. Take them all or as desired.
 
MUSIC APPRECIATION  THROUGH DANCE:
Grow in your  appreciation of music by exploring different kinds (genre) and interpreting them through movement. Barbara Massey-Nino, a professionally trained musician, will lead a series of seven classes that include background information and class discussion of the music, as well as, low impact dance movements. Learn about a wonderful subject, listen to some beautiful music, and get a little physical exercise too. Genres include Folk, Country, Jazz, Rock, Classical, World, and other.

 

Classes will be held at the Presbyterian Church, 2360 Longwood Dr. beginning March 18th and will continue through April 29th, 5:30 - 6:30 pm. Wear comfortable clothing.

 

Register for the whole series of classes prior to March 18th at a cost of $25. After March 18th classes may be attended for a cost of $5 per class. Attend all the classes or as you can. Suitable for all ages 14 and up.
 
TAPPING INTO CREATIVITY THROUGH DRAWING:
Join local artists Matt Belk and discover new areas of artistic expression.
Matt will share his own techniques and the working creativity exercises he's developed over many years to help students explore drawing and mixed media through mark making. Matt's 1 1/2 hours class is being offered on Saturday March 21st at 10:30 am  OR Wed March 25th at either 10:30 am OR 5:30 pm. Cost is $10 per class. Classes will be held at Mindpower Gallery, 417 Fir Ave. Bring whatever drawing supplies you have available as well as paper or other materials to draw on. CHAIN SAW CARVING:
Local chain saw competitor Ellie Kelland will share the basics of log carving for those beginners interested in the process. Safe work habits, equipment use, required tools, basic rough shaping, and finishing techniques are examples subjects covered by the class. Students will work on their choice of bear, cannon, or mushroom.

 

Meet at 542 Fir, next to the Orca Gallery, on Saturday April 11th at 10 am, weather permitting. Please wear sturdy shoes, and long pants and a long sleeved shirt. Bring safety glasses if you have them.

Through a partnership with Southwestern Oregon Community College, participants in next month's CERT Basic Training can receive Continuing Education Units. CERT has been operating for several years in the Reedsport area, but just found out about the ability to partner with SOCC. Team members are very excited to offer this ability to people who may need CEU's and want to learn more about helping themselves and their neighbors in times of disaster.

 

The concept of CERT was developed and implemented by the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985. The Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987 underscored the area-wide threat of a major disaster and confirmed the need for training civilians to meet their immediate needs. Since that time CERT has spread across the country including a strong presence on the southern Oregon coast.

 

Reedsport CERT will be holding a new set of classes on Saturdays during the month of March. Designed to train neighbors how to help each other in times of emergency, the classes will cover such things as basic first aid and CPR, light search and rescue, team building, disaster psychology, basic disaster preparations, "Go Bags" and much more.

 

Besides learning information for personal safety, taking the classes also qualifies individuals to join the actual CERT team. They do educational programs throughout the community and assist the police and fire departments when requested. Many CERT members have also cross trained with Red Cross to help them if shelters are needed.

It is time for our Annual Sharing the Coast Conference. 

 

 From plankton to whales, from seabirds to marine debris, this year's Sharing the Coast Conference offers a wealth of information about coastal science and natural history.  The eighth annual conference, co-sponsored by CoastWatch and the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators (NAME), takes place March 13-15 at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport.

 

 The conference's primary theme this year is citizen science.  Lectures, workshops and field trips will introduce participants to many ways in which volunteers can assist scientists in gathering important information about coastal and ocean resources.  While the conference is designed to provide information and training to CoastWatch volunteers who monitor the shoreline, as well as to those who teach about the coast and ocean (the members of NAME), everyone is welcome, and anyone who loves the shore and the sea will find much to inform and fascinate them.

Sharing the Coast commences with a Friday evening Community Talk that is free and open to all.  Marine mammalogist Sheanna Steingass will discuss efforts by scientists to learn more about our marine mammal populations, including her own research on harbor seals and coastal ecology.  Her presentation takes place at 7 p.m. in the Hennings Auditorium at the HMSC.
On Saturday morning, HMSC Director Bob Cowen will kick things off with a keynote talk on "Citizen Science and the Plankton Portal."  Saturday's other plenary session speaker will be physician and CoastWatcher Al Dohner, speaking on "The Global Problem of Marine Debris," with a special emphasis on the health impacts of plastics in the ocean.  Break-out sessions will deal with topics ranging from marine mammal and sharks to the recent Casssin's auklet die-off and monitoring for sea star wasting syndrome.  Field trips will visit tidepools, mudflats and streams.
Sunday speakers include marine mammal researcher Courtney Hann, on a citizen science project involving whales, and the Audubon Society's Paul Engelmeyer, on seabirds and marine reserves.  Break-out sessions involve "driftline ecology" (what is found on the shoreline) and a citizen science project that helps oceanographers track plankton.  Field trips will focus on geology and on citizen science practice.
The conference also features a Saturday evening party (5:30 p.m. at the Rogue Brewery in South Beach) that will feature food, libations, a visual tour of our marine reserves and the undersea habitats they shelter presented by Stacy Galleher of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the annual cutthroat trivia game.
Cost of the conference is $20 (including Saturday lunch) for members of Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition (CoastWatch's parent organization) or NAME, $40 for members of the public.  Conference-goers can join either organization if not already a member and take the discount.  Registration for Sunday only is $10.  PDU's are available for those who need them.

 The CoastWatch program invites the public to a double-barreled learning experience on Wednesday, March 11.  The free events are open to all.

Jellies, aka jellyfish, are a frequent find on the Oregon shoreline. Questions about jellies come to CoastWatch with some frequency. Scientists also have a lot of questions about jellies, concerning the increase in jellyfish "blooms."

 If you would like to learn more about these denizens of our nearshore ocean and occupants of our driftline—those that are native, and those that may be invading—join us for a fascinating presentation on all things jelly on Wednesday, March 11 in Coos Bay. Dr. Richard Brodeur will be speaking on "Jellies—More than Just Slime," in a presentation jointly sponsored by CoastWatch and the SOCC Biology Club.

 The talk takes place in Eden Hall 1 on the Southwestern Oregon Community College Campus (988 Newmark Ave. in Coos Bay) at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

 Evidence from ecosystems around the world suggests that jellyfish blooms are increasing in frequency and severity, most likely due to human activities such as overfishing, habitat modification, and species introductions. Although jellyfish have some positive benefits to humans in terms of food production and the aquarium trade, most of the impacts negatively affect human endeavors such as fishing, tourism, and power generation.

 Jellyfish expert Ric Brodeur will discuss the evidence for increasing jellyfish populations and their potential impacts from examples in several ecosystems, and attempts to control these populations or mitigate against their impacts. He will also talk about the various types of jellies that we find on our shoreline and how to identify them.

 Brodeur is a Research Fisheries Oceanographer working in the Fish Ecology Division of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, NOAA Fisheries, and is based in Newport. He has published on a variety of topics ranging from satellite oceanography to fish bioenergetics to fisheries acoustics, but has focused much of his research on feeding and food web interactions centering on fish. He has had a longstanding interest in jellyfish and particularly in how they interact with fish species.

Earlier in the day, CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Fawn Custer will guide a tidepool walk beginning at the Cape Arago State Park Gazebo at 11 a.m.  She will discuss rocky shore ecology generally, but will also provide information on the current "sea star wasting syndrome" epidemic affecting Oregon's shore, and provide information about participating in a citizen science effort to monitor sea star populations.  CoastWatch is a program of the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition, which conducts a number of citizen science projects.

You are invited to the Main Street Open House event being held on March 6th from 5:00-7:00pm in the City Hall Community Center. The Reedsport Main Street Program is a community driven approach to the revitalization of Reedsport. Attending will give you an opportunity to learn about the program, meet the new Mayor of Reedsport, get to know the Board of Directors, hear about developing projects, and meet the artists of the logo submissions. The Main Street Program projects are focusing efforts towards revitalization projects that will improve our quality of life, foster working relationships between the private and public sector, and ultimately increase Reedsport's business base and desirability in all three business districts. Our vision is to provide a more attractive climate to attract new visitors, businesses and investment to our community.
At 6:00pm there will be announcements and presentations to students from the Charter School who submitted logo designs.
There will be refreshments and cookies available through CDABA's sponsorship. There will also be updates and information on committees and current happenings. Everyone can find ways to get involved and support the Main Street Program and help to Renew Reedsport together!

OSU Douglas County Extension Service will present a workshop on "Pruning Blueberry Plants" on Saturday, Feb 21 at Elkton Community Education Center.  Master Gardeners will demonstrate techniques to keep plants healthy and increase production.  The class begins at 10am on the greenhouse patio and will last till noon.  There will be time for hands-on experience in the ECEC berry patch so participants should bring hand pruners, gloves and raingear as needed. The Lower Umpqua Flycasters, a local member Club of the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) will be holding their 25th annual Fly Fishing Expo at the Reedsport Community Charter School Cafeteria, South 22nd Street, Reedsport, OR from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on February 28, 2015. 
Special features include demonstrations and programs on various aspects of fishing, fly tying and fly casting; equipment displays, informational displays by various stream and fish enhancement groups,  a concession stand with meals and snacks available, and raffle drawings each hour all day.
Special presentations begin at 10 a.m. and include:  Dean Finnerty on Smallmouth Bass and Shad fly fishing and Lloyd Thurman speaking on Dune Lakes. 

 

This year the Expo includes a special showing of "Mending the Line." This documentary tells the extraordinary story of Frank Moore, a 90 year old WWII veteran and fly fishing legend and his return to Normandy to fish the rivers he saw as a soldier.  This award winning film was released in spring of 2014 and will be available at the Expo.

 

This is the only event of its kind on the south and central Oregon coast.  The Expo is totally free to the public as the purpose of the Expo is to promote conservation and introduce the sport of fly fishing to adults and young children. The club has members from Waldport to Gold Beach.

BACKGROUND ON THE LOWER UMPQUA FLYCASTERS
The Lower Umpqua Flycasters, a non-profit fly fishing club based in Reedsport, Oregon, was founded in 1990 to accommodate persons with all levels of fly fishing and fly tying skills.  The club is a member of the Oregon Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers.
Club meetings and special sessions have featured fly-tying, rod building, leader construction, fly casting, and many other activities.  Outings have included fly fishing for trout, half pounders, and salmon.  In addition, the club hosts an annual Tube-O-Rama float trip on the Umpqua River fishing for smallmouth bass.
Each year, LUFC sponsors a Fly Fishing Expo to introduce the sport of fly fishing to the general public.  The Expo features lectures and demonstrations by experts in fly fishing, fly tying, fly casting, and conservation.

In the faint light of the attic, an old man, tall and stooped, bent his great frame and made his way to a stack of boxes that sat near one of the little half-windows.  Setting aside one of the dusty albums, he pulled from the box what appeared to be a journal from his grown son's childhood. Opening the yellowed pages, he glanced over a short reading, and his lips curved in an unconscious smile. Entry after entry stirred a sentimental hunger in his heart like the longing a gardener feels in the winter for the fragrance of spring flowers. But it was accompanied by the painful memory that his son's simple recollections of those days were far different from his own. But how different?

 

Opening a glass cabinet door, he reached in and pulled out an old business journal. Turning, he sat down at his desk and placed the two journals beside each other. As he opened his journal, the old man's eyes fell upon an inscription that stood out because it was so brief in comparison to other days. In his own neat handwriting were these words:

 

Wasted the whole day fishing with Jimmy. Didn't catch a thing.

 

With a deep sigh and a shaking hand, he took Jimmy's journal and found the boy's entry for the same day, June 4. Large scrawling letters, pressed deeply into the paper, read:

 

Went fishing with my dad. Best day of my life.

The Mindpower Gallery is excited to announce its second wine  tasting event of the year. Our second tasting of the year is with Delfino vineyards from Roseburg, Or. Owners Jim and Terri Delfino came to the Umpqua Valley in 2000 and planted the 18 acres that make up the Hillside and Creekside vineyards. In 2009 they opened their charming tasting room, which reflects the warmth of a Tuscan sunset as it overlooks the beautiful vineyard, lake and its mountain views. They have 7 varietals planted, Tempranello, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, an Italian grape Dolcetto, Zinfindel, Merlot, and Muller Thurgau. .  Part of the Delfino vineyard is dedicated to a Southern Oregon University research program which includes additional red and white varietals.They are also partnered with the Umpqua Community College Southern Oregon Wine Institute, which enables the students to work in the industry and earn extra credits.

Dental Clinic Receives Three Rivers Foundation Grant
 
The Rotary Club of Reedsport is excited to announce that its dental clinic received a $10,000 grant from the Three Rivers Foundation, the giving arm of the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, to continue to promote its free dental care to children and adults residing within boundaries of the Reedsport School District.
 
Upon learning about the grant, Dr. Goorhuis said that he was "excited."  With the additional funds, Dr. Goorhuis will plan to hold more clinics.  He went on to say, that instead of three to four times a year, he "will be adding more clinics and hopes to hold them every other month." 
 
Dr. Gerhard Goorhuis, and his assistant, Bonnie Gentle, provide the dental care for children and adults in need.  The next dental clinic is being scheduled for February 20th and 21st.  The Family Resource Center processes applications for those seeking an appointment.  If you are interested in seeing if you are eligible, contact the Family Resource Center at 541-271-9700.

We have three committees that are chipping away at projects in different areas that are all working towards the same goal of revitalizing Reedsport and encouraging growth. The Reedsport Main Street Program is a community-driven approach to commercial district revitalization. Being a part of this program gives you, the community members, the opportunity to shape that growth and be a part of a collaborative effort to Renew Reedsport.

 

I wanted to remind everyone of the upcoming meeting and event dates. There has been a LOT of projects developing and increased participation at meetings. The Reedsport Main Street Committee Meetings are ALWAYS open to the public and community participation is encouraged. Attending a meeting does not mean that you are obligated to stay on the committee. We are always happy to have new community members attend our meetings to hear about projects, ideas, and offer support.

St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl & Trivia Challenge
 
CDABA's annual St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl & Trivia Challenge will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2015, starting at 4 p.m.  The event will start at the Waterfront Family Dining Room, 351 Riverfront Way, Reedsport, OR  97467.  This is an adult event.  All proceeds from this year's event will benefit the City of Reedsport's Main Street program.
 
Prizes to be awarded this year include a prize for the winning trivia team, the team that raises the most donations for the community project and a prize for the best dressed team.  The registration fee per team is $20 for a team of 4, and $5 additional per person (unlimited number).  Team registration forms are available at the Mindpower Gallery in Reedsport and from CDABA members. 
 
Volunteers are also needed.  Volunteers are needed to host at the trivia challenge venues.  The goal is to have a minimum of two persons per trivia location.  There are five trivia venues this year--The Waterfront, The Schooner Café, Tides Inn, Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge.

There are enough trails and habitats at this park to spend days here, but this will be a short introduction to habitats and birds within a mile of the main parking area. We hope to see Lewis's Woodpeckers, which sometimes winter here, as well as a variety of other regular winter birds. You will likely need boots, or at least hiking shoes, as the trails can sometimes be muddy. After a couple hours birding, you can continue on your own at the park or elsewhere, or follow me for short stops at Plat I Reservoir and Ford's Pond "on the way home."  Celebrate Valentine's Day at Elkton Community Education Center, on Thursday, February 12 at 6 P.M.  The meal, featuring Tri-tip roast, salad, veggies, and potatoes, will also include special desserts and coffee or punch. Cost for the dinner is $12.50 per person. Returning by request, Elkton's popular music group, Décor'mm , will again be part of the holiday evening.  They perform a variety of music, including big band and romantic ballads.  Valentine's Day is the second themed dinner of the year at ECEC.  Reservations may be made at the ECEC office at 584-2692 or by email at butterfly@rconnects.com, by Monday, Feb. 9. Coastal Douglas Arts & Business Alliance (CDABA) is issuing a challenge to all local artists in and around the communities of Reedsport, Gardiner and Winchester Bay. The theme for the 2015 Artist Challenge is "Trees."
 
An Artist Challenge reception will be held on Friday, June 19, 2015, between 5-7 pm, at the Mindpower Gallery, 417 Fir Avenue (Hwy38), Reedsport, OR  97467. CDABA will supply cash prizes for viewers' choice - first $100, second $50, and third $25 and judge's choice - $100.
 
Artists who wish to submit an entry must register his or her piece (limit two entries per artist) on Friday, June 12, 2015, between 10:00 am and 5:30 pm at the Mindpower Gallery. All art mediums are welcome. An entry fee of $5 per piece will be applied.  No early or late registrations will be accepted.  Friday, June 12th will be the day to submit art pieces to be included in the challenge.

We will spend an hour and a half along the east side of the two ponds, mostly looking at waterfowl, but other birds will be around as well. I expect 6 or more species of ducks, as well as Pied-billed Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant, and Wilson's Snipe. Western Bluebirds, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Yellow-rumped Warblers are often around. This will be a good time for new birders who are just beginning to learn different species of ducks and other water birds, but all skill levels are welcome. FIELD TRIP: MILDRED KANIPE MEMORIAL PARK (NE OF OAKLAND)
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2015, 0830-1030

 

There are enough trails and habitats at this park to spend days here, but this will be a short introduction to habitats and birds within a mile of the main parking area. We hope to see Lewis's Woodpeckers, which sometimes winter here, as well as a variety of other regular winter birds. You will likely need boots, or at least hiking shoes, as the trails can sometimes be muddy. After a couple hours birding, you can continue on your own at the park or elsewhere, or follow me for short stops at Plat I Reservoir and Ford's Pond "on the way home." FIELD TRIP: FORD'S POND (WEST OF SUTHERLIN)
FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 2015, 1000-1200

 

Ford's Pond is one of central Douglas County's premiere birding locations. We will spend a couple hours walking around the east end of the pond looking in the brush for songbirds, on the water for waterbirds, and the skies and trees for raptors. Because of the concentration of waterfowl, Bald Eagles and Peregrine Falcons are sometimes attracted to the area. Bring binoculars, a scope, and a field guide if you have them. Meet at 1000 along the gravel shoulder on the west side of Church Rd. The road around the pond is often muddy, so boots are recommended. Questions? CDABA Art Academy -
 
Calling all artists – Coastal Douglas Arts & Business Alliance (CDABA) is currently making plans for a Spring Art Academy. If you, or someone you know, have an art, craft, or other talent or hobby that you would like to share, please contact Theresa Chickering at tjckickering@yahoo.com to discuss the various ways CDABA can assist you in presenting a class. CDABA can assist with everything from advertising, handling class registrations and assisting in finding a location to host your class. For first timers, CDABA can even provide assistance in how to go about teaching your class.
 
Any subject and medium is eligible for classes. CDABA classes have included quilting, scrapbooking, wreath making, calligraphy, ceramics, baking, painting, felting, business Facebook page, and insurance for art based businesses. Classes can be demonstrations, discussions, or full participation (hands on) classes. Almost any subject in any format is welcome. Student fees for classes are set by the instructor. CDABA is also interested in advertising art classes and art events of others in its schedule. Please contact Theresa Chickering if you want your event listed in the schedule.

Oregon Coast Music Assoc. PR for 'Winterlude' events
   The Oregon Coast Music Association, sponsor of the 37th annual Oregon Coast Music Festival kicks off the season with an exciting weekend of events Jan 30 and 31.
   First event is the keenly anticipated Poster Preview Party, Jan 30, 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the Coos Art Museum, 235 Anderson Ave, in downtown Coos Bay.  Don McMichael, internationally known artist, will unveil his 20th and final poster, representing the 2015 Festival.  This is the only scheduled event where Mr McMichael will appear to personalize each limited edition poster puchased.  In addition, for the only time in Festival history, James Paul Festival Music Director and principal conductor, will be present to sign the poster as well, making it truly one-of-a-kind.

ROTARY CLUB TALENT SHOW – February 7, 2015 @ 6 pm
Encore Performance by Megan Wood
 
The Rotary Club of Reedsport's community talent show The Coastal Douglas Has Talent!—will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 6 p.m. at the Pacific Auditorium, located at the Reedsport Community Charter School, 2260 Longwood Drive, Reedsport, OR  97467.  Tickets are $5 and are available now at Umpqua Bank and Fullhart Insurance.  Tickets will also be available at the door.  The talent show starts at 6 pm, but the Name that Tune contest, sponsored by Umpqua Bank will start at 5:30 pm. 
 
The 2014 winner, Megan Wood, will be back with an encore performance.   Megan continues to be homeschooled and is now in her sophomore year.  She sang a number of different songs, in a variety of genre this past summer as a contestant in the Bay Area teen Idol competition.  Megan made it to the semi-finals.  She also sings on a worship team at Hauser Community Church and with the North Bend High School choir.  During this past year she added theater to her resume by performing in the New Artists fall production of The Guardian, in Bandon, Oregon.
 
A variety of performers auditioned to participate in the 2015 talent show, including a lot of first time participants.  They include Craig Robinson, singer and songwriter; Jade Nanda, violinist; Emily and Michael Wilson, singing; Trevor Standiford, vocals and guitar; Amy Pedder, singer; Tyler Raymond, beatboxing; Devan Kutch, pianist; and Danny Ottinger, guitarist.  The trio, "The Wayniacs" will be back to delight everyone with their music talent that involves a little humor.
 
Guest Performers have also been invited again this year.  These guests are Rotarians and semi-professionals who are sprinkled throughout the show, but who do not distract from the audience vote for its best community performance.  This year's guest performers will include Terry Moore, pianist, Buck Tohill, guitarist, and John Stokes a Rotarian will also perform a guitar solo.
 
Of course, also returning by popular demand is Rotarian and television personality from Medford, Oregon, Kingsley Kelley who will once again serve as Master of Ceremonies.

Walk-In Clinic
At Lower Umpqua Hospital

 

Lower Umpqua Hospital—Kathy Moon, FNP-BC, has accepted a position at LUH Walk-In Clinic and will be returning to our medical community. Kathy will join Dr. Audrey Shank and the staff of the LUH Walk-In Clinic the beginning of March, 2015.  The popular program's hours will be expanding as it moves to the lower floor of the hospital. 

 

"I see my role as helping patients meet their immediate needs at the Walk-in Clinic and assisting them in finding a local health care provider for long-term needs."

 

Kathy Moon is a graduate of Western University of Health Sciences, where she earned a Masters of Science in Nursing.  She is Board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and has worked since 1999 with a majority of her time spent in walk in clinics and family practice.  Kathy most recently worked at a walk in clinic in Florence and prior to that was at Dunes Family Health Care for 8 ½  years.

 

We are extremely happy to have Kathy back in our medical community and look forward to working with her again.

Coos Bay and South Coast Folk Society is one of six stops across the US and Canada for the Country Dance & Song Society centennial tour.

From October 4 – 10, we'll host a week of activities for singers, dancers, musicians…. We'll go into the schools, work with after-school youth organizations and have outreach activities in libraries… we'll hold workshops and dances. Our goals include skill-building, community development, and outreach.

Helping us the facilitate this week of event will be a group of musicians and dance leader that CDSS is bringing here from North Carolina – Firefly Family Band and Bob Dalsemer.
