As we saw on March 11, 2011, a tsunami can reach clear across the Pacific Ocean and do damage to the western coastline of the United States. We watched as the images coming from Japan showed us the strength and power of a tsunami. These images merely reinforced the scenes of devastation we saw in 2004 from the Indian Ocean tsunami. We can never forget or ignore the fact that we are at risk from such devastation on the Oregon coastline.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone is similar in size and shape as the subduction zone that triggered the 2004 tsunami. The last known earthquake on the Cascadia Subduction Zone happen on January 26, 1700. The geologic record reveals 41 of these megathrust earthquakes over the last 10,000 years. They have happened repeatedly in the past, and will happen again. We just don't know when. And when the Cascadia Subduction Zone spawns its next megathrust earthquake, it will send a massive tsunami racing towards the Oregon coastline.
Oregon Emergency Management Geologic Hazards Coordinator Althea Rizzo and other state and federal agency experts will be holding free preparedness workshops concerning tsunamis and earthquakes in several Oregon communities in March.  American Red Cross, and other emergency responders will be on hand to answer questions. Find out how you can get involved and make your family and community better prepared for any natural disaster.
Oregon has suffered considerable damage from two moderate earthquake events in 1993 and a distant tsunami from Alaska in 1964. Scientific evidence indicates that Oregon is at risk for much larger and potentially more damaging earthquake associated with the Cascadia Subduction Zone that is expected to generate strong ground shaking and a destructive tsunami. The recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan brings the hazard home and offers a teachable moment.
Join us as we talk about how to be more prepared for earthquakes and tsunamis in Oregon!
