The Scottsburg Community Service Association has functioned for many years
helping out members of our community when times get tough with food, clothing,
funds or what ever is needed. Among the many fund raisers are two bake sales,
which receive a great response not only from the people who buy and enjoy the bake
goods but also from the members of the community that provide the goodies. There
are always lots of homemade pies, cakes and cookies. Come join in on the fun, help
support your community and enjoy the yummies.

If you are interested in art and like being around people who love to paint, then you will enjoy our open house. Our club represents a cross section of artists; painting at different levels of experience and in different mediums (watercolor, acrylic, oil, etc).
We meet every Monday to paint and help each other work out the many problems involved in producing a painting to be proud of. We are always interested in new members and would love to have you come to see what we are all about. Refreshments will be served.

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION #6 of 6
South Coast Folk Society sponsors several folk music-related activities each month. Here is information about our October events:
Sing-along
The monthly sing-along is held every 2nd Sunday of the month; people of all ages and vocal abilities are welcome. This month, the sing-along will be held on October 9th from 4:00 until 6:00 pm at 2100 Union St. in North Bend (the church behind Little Theater on the Bay). Our "Rise Up Singing" songbooks have many kinds of songs. You are sure to find songs that you know, or you can bring a song to share. Acoustic instruments are welcome. Here's a YouTube video of one of my favorite songs that was shared at the September sing-along: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_2lGkEU4Xs

International folk dance
SCFS holds an International folk dance on the second Friday of each month from September through May. The next one will be October 14th. Join us at 7:00 pm at Greenacres Grange to learn new dances and review dances we have done before. Admission is $4 or $3 for SCFS members. Most dances are line or circle dances, no partners are needed. No experience is needed, either.
Sharon Cawley, our folk dance coordinator, is looking for volunteers who could teach dances on Oct 14, Nov 11, and Dec 9. You could teach either a dance that hasn't been taught before or a repeat. It would be ideal to have dances for beginners, some for intermediates, and one or two for the twinkle toes. Would you be willing? Please let Sharon know what dance(s) you'd like to do. She can be reached at sharoncawley@hotmail.com or at 541-888-1129. Among other dances, this month we will learn an exuberant Israeli dance called Machar.
Contra dance
Our contra dances are held on the third Saturday of the month at Greenacres Grange. THIS MONTH, the contra dance happens on October 15th, the SAME WEEKEND as the 2nd Friday folk dance! How often can you have such an action-packed weekend of dancing? And you know what they say about dancing frequently, don't you!? http://socialdance.stanford.edu/syllabi/smarter.htm
The contra dance runs from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. General admission is $7; seniors (over 60) and full time students with student ID get in for $6. SCFS members pay $5. This month's dance (October 15) will feature music by The Eugene Barnstormers; our caller will be Ron Bell-Roemer of Bend. This is an alcohol, smoke, and fragrance-free event. All ages are welcome, no experience is necessary, no partner is needed (this dance encourages mingling). If you can walk, you can contra dance!
Hosts are needed!
We bring in some awesome talent for our contra dances. For me, it has been a truly gratifying experience to provide overnight lodging to our visiting bands and callers over the years. SCFS would like to broaden our base of hosts. If this is a way that you could become more involved with South Coast Folk Society, contact Karen Olsen, our Housing Coordinator at karenpub@gmail.com. Getting to know the wonderful and talented people who travel from distant places to perform at our dance has been a real joy to us. I encourage you to share in the fun of hosting.
Open band
For the Dec 3 contra dance, we will feature an open band -- meaning, anyone who is interested in performing can be a part of the band. There will be a couple of rehearsals prior to the dance, so let me know if you are interested in playing so you will be informed about the rehearsals. In the meantime, I'm attaching the sheet music for the tune sets we'll use for that dance. A practice CD is also available. Reply to this email if you would like to arrange to get one.
Thank you for your involvement with folk music on the south coast. For more information, visit our website http://southcoastfolksociety.wordpress.com/ or be our friend on Facebook!
Hope to see you on a dance floor or in a song circle SOON!
