THIS YEAR'S COAST CONFERENCE FEATURES RANGE OF ACTIVITIES
Coastal science and conservation, plus a special cruise, tour and celebratory bonfire, will all be part of the 28th annual Coast Conference, taking place on Saturday, Sept. 17, in Newport.
The conference, for the entire coastal region, draws Oregonians from throughout the state who love the coast and want to learn more about its natural history and current issues. It is sponsored by the non-profit Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition, which is also celebrating its 40th anniversary as an advocate for coastal conservation.
Registration is now open on the group's website, http://oregonshores.org/. Registration on the day of the conference begins at Newport's Performing Arts Center at 9 a.m.
The conference kicks off with a 10 a.m. tour of the new Yaquina Bay facilities of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The tour is free, but pre-registration is required.
The main portion of the conference begins at 11 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center (777 W. Olive St. in Newport). The morning portion will include the Oregon Shores general members' meeting, and an historical overview of the group's 40-year-long efforts to preserve the coastal environment. A buffet lunch in the PAC's lobby will be catered by Local Ocean, a Newport business which supports a local, sustainable fishing industry.
Afternoon speakers begin at 1:15 p.m. Two of the key presentations concern climate change and how it may affect Oregon's coastal region.
Oregon Shores board member Al Solomon, a recently retired global change ecologist, will speak on "Climate Change and Its Impacts on Coastal Oregon." Solomon, a Charleston resident whose last posting was as head of the U.S. Forest Service's climate research team in Washington, D.C., will explain the current state of scientific knowledge of climate change and survey the projected effects on Oregon's coast.
Steve Adams, managing director of the Climate Leadership Initiative, associated with Willamette University, will discuss "Preparing for Climate Change on the Oregon Coast: Insights for Local Climate Adaptation from Initiatives Around the Country." Adams has more than 15 years of public policy experience in climate change, energy, environment and natural resource management issues. He most recently served in the administration of Florida Governor Charlie Crist, where he directed energy and global climate change policy development and managed the staff of the state's Energy and Climate Commission and the Governor's Action Team on Energy and Climate Change.
Also speaking will be Oregon State University historian William Robbins. His talk, "Industrializing Oregon's Coastal Watersheds: The Consequences of Hubris," will explore the ways in which civilization has changed the coastal landscape over the past two centuries. Robbins, author of Landscapes of Promise: The Oregon Story, 1800-1940, and Landscapes of Conflict: The Oregon Story, 1940-2000, has studied the interaction between human beings and our region's environment during a long and distinguished career.
Finally, geologist George Priest of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries will address the question, "The March 2011 Tsunami: Could It Happen Here?" Priest will describe the recent Japanese earthquake and the impacts we might see in Oregon if a comparable event took place here.
The conference will also feature a 5:30 p.m. dinner cruise of Yaquina Bay with Marine Discovery Tours. Participants will learn about estuarine ecology from the on-board naturalist and gain insights into how climate change may affect the bay, all while enjoying food and drink.
Festivities will wind up with a bonfire at 7 p.m. in Nye Beach. Featured will be the old-time Americana band "Hot Milk." This event is free, although pre-registration is requested.
Cost of the conference is $25 for members, $35 for non-members; lunch is an additional $15. The cruise, a fund-raiser for Oregon Shores, is $75 for members, $100 for non-members (including membership).
For more information about the conference, or to register offline, contact Pat Wolter, (503) 647-2012; pcwolter@comcast.net.
