First Friday to be held at Myrtlewood Gallery
Kimberly King will be the featured artist at First Friday . . . Art for Everyone on Friday, July 1st between 5 and 7 pm at the Myrtlewood Gallery, 1125 Highway 101, Reedsport.
King specializes in Miniature Myrtlewood Carvings.  She began carving in 1988 under the guidance of Russian woodcarver Abe Goertzan.  In 1992 she carved her first miniature bird out of basswood.  That was the beginning, from then on several other animals were miniaturized by Kim's knife.
In 1994 Kim moved to Oregon and was introduced to Myrtlewood.  "It was love at first sight.  Myrtlewood is not only beautiful to look at, it is wonderful to work with."
Although she carves a variety of different animals, her little birds are still her favorites.  Each carving is given individual attention.  She first roughs out the basic shape with a bandsaw and then finishes them with her dremel tools, knives, and sanders until they have a character of their own.
Keeping within a price range of $10-$50, Kim keeps her art affordable for those even on a tight budget.  Many folks have started a collection of her miniatures.  You might want to start off with a pair of your favorites.
She works out of her home in Reedsport and is kept busy supplying The Myrtlewood Gallery with her wonderful little critters.
CDABA and the Myrtlewood Gallery invite you to join the fun and meet the artist.
This is a FREE EVENT.  CDABA sponsors the First Friday art events at a different location each month.  Future dates will be August 5th (Reedsport Natural Foods), September 2nd (2nd Annual Art Auction-Winchester Bay Community Center), October 7th (Reedsport Natural Foods), November 4th (Lower Umpqua Hospital), and December 2nd (Reedsport Natural Foods and Anniversary Celebration at Coastal Ceramics/Ocean Breeze).  The GALA Event will be held Halloween weekend again this year—more information to come, but plan your costumes now!
