PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION #1 of 5

WHAT:  Florence composer/arranger featured in Pops Concert
WHERE: Pacific Auditorium in Reedsport
WHEN:  Sunday, May 1, 2011 @ 2:00 pm
WHO:  The Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO)
Contact: website, WWW.OCCO.WS . Or you may call 541-997-6770

Music by Charles Perkins will highlight the Spring Pops concert of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO). The Reedsport concert which ends the fourth year of bringing live music to this community will be a matinee on Sunday, May 1 at 2 P.M. in the Pacific Auditorium at Reedsport Community Charter School.

The special two-for-one "early-bird" ticket price will again be offered. The tickets are $10 and admit two persons. They are currently on sale at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank. On the afternoon of the concert, tickets will be on sale at the door for the regular price of $10 per person.

A special feature of this year's concerts will be three originals and two arrangements from gifted Florence musician Perkins. One of the pieces, JuJuPeBo, was originally written for the Coos Bay area Just Jensen Woodwind Quintet, a group for which Perkins has created many arrangements. The title uses the names of the Jensen sisters and sister-in-law (Judy, Judy, Peggy, and Bonnie) in the title.

Additional Perkins works will include two other originals, plus "Bubbles In The Wine," (the Lawrence Welk theme song), and a swing arrangement of the Alfred Hitchcock theme. Perkins, an accomplished professional trumpeter and teacher, has written and arranged music for many Oregon groups, but his special affection for OCCO has given the orchestra many fine works.

For the past several years he has also arranged and created music for Pat Sapp's Florence Christmas variety shows, the Little Ole Big Band shows at North Bend's Little Theater On The Bay, the Bay Area Concert Band, and the Magnificent Seven (plus or minus) tuba group of Coos Bay.

His work is characterized by lively rhythm and creative orchestration and those who perform his music find it a distinct pleasure. His contributions are highlights of the orchestra's repertoire and draw from many styles and eras. Conductors for this Pops concert are Robin DeVour, John Monks and Rafael Videira.

To get more information about this event, visit the orchestra's website, WWW.OCCO.WS , or call OCCO at 541-997-6770.

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION #2 of 5

WHAT:   Beacon Award Reception
WHEN: Monday, May 9, 2011
WHO: Sponsored by Lower Umpqua Hospital Foundation
Contact: Delaine Humphreys 541-271-9700

A reception for this year's recipients of the Beacon Award will be Monday, May 9 at 5:30 p.m. in the Lower Umpqua Hospital conference room. The conference room is located on the lower level. Enter through the door marked "receiving" at the far end of the parking lot.

The Beacon Award was established by Lower Umpqua Hospital Foundation to recognize the voluntary efforts of people and groups in our community that improved the health, wellness and safety of coastal Douglas County.

This year the individual award goes to Kathy Moon, Family Nurse Practitioner at Dunes Family Health Care, for her involvement with the Red Cross Disaster Team; the contribution of articles on health and wellness for local publications; her willingness to speak to local groups on health topics; and her advocacy for mental health services.
The group award goes to three people who have worked hard to provide dental care to local children and adults without the necessary resources. Dr. Gary Goorhuis, dentist; Bonnie Gentle, assistant; and Ann Launstein, coordinator along with the sponsorship of Rotary Club of Reedsport, make it possible for the Medical Teams International Mobile Dental Van to come to Reedsport three times a year.

The public is invited to an informal reception for the Beacon Award recipients on May 9 to recognize these individuals and enjoy a sampling of healthy snacks and beverages.

Not Yet a Fountaineer – It is not too late!
Fountaineers are still needed for 2011.  Keeping the lights on and the water flowing at Reedsport's Confluence Fountain is made possible by the generous donations from members of the community.  Coastal Douglas Arts & Business Alliance (CDABA), the local nonprofit who oversees the fountain, is conducting its annual drive to raise the funds needed to maintain the fountain.  Although donations in any amount are encouraged, those community members who donate $100 or more become known as "Fountaineers."
Won't you join your neighbors and become a Fountaineer today?  When the weather clears – you will see a work party out at the Confluence Fountain sprucing it up for summer and getting the spigots cleared (once again).
CDABA is a 501(c)(3), non-profit corporation and your donation is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.  If you would like to make a donation, make your check payable to CDABA and mail it to PO Box 5, Reedsport, OR  97467.  CDABA's federal identification number is 93-1282012.
We hope you will decide to help support the Confluence Fountain and make a SPLASH in the community.  For more information, please call Kathleen Miller at 541-271-2101
