Scholarship Application Deadline
The Rotary Club of Reedsport and the Rotary Scholarship Fund, Inc. announces the deadline to submit scholarship applications.  The Rotary Scholarship Fund, Inc., a local nonprofit, annually awards scholarships to local high school seniors and those students who are home schooled and who are finishing their high school education.  Students may be from the Reedsport or Elkton School District.  The deadline to submit a Scholarship Application is Friday, March 18, 2010.  Applications are available at the office of the Reedsport Community Charter School.  For more information contact Scott Somers (541-271-3603).

WHAT:            Beach Clean-up and Glass Float "Give-Away"

Reedsport Rotary and Eugene Glass School Sponsor the Glass Float "Give-Away" during SOLV's Annual Great Oregon Spring Beach Clean-up.
The Reedsport Rotary Club has adopted the beach accessed by Sparrow Park Road (just North of Gardiner) during SOLV's Annual Great Oregon Spring Beach Clean-up. 
To add to the excitement of this event, Reedsport Rotary and Eugene Glass School are donating glass floats.  These floats will be given away by raffle to those who volunteer their time during the clean-up.  Participants will receive one raffle ticket for each bag of trash turned in during the day.  At the end of the clean-up, names will be drawn and each winner will receive a glass float – limit one per person. 
Meet us at the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce parking lot (junction of Highways 101 & 38) at 9:30 am.  Carpooling and transportation will be arranged that morning to get everyone to the clean-up site.  You can also join the group any time during the morning by simply coming to the beach site at the end of Sparrow Park Road.

Would you like to be a Lighthouse Tour Guide?  The Umpqua River Lighthouse Museum is looking for local volunteers to serve as Museum Hosts and Lighthouse Tour Guides for the upcoming summer season. Learn the history of the Lighthouse, the duties of its Keepers and how the 1st Order Fresnel lens shines its red and white beams 20 miles out to see.
Special Long Winter Weekend Opening:
The Museum will be open to the public and conducting guided lighthouse tours from 10 am - 3 pm on Friday, February 18 through Monday, February 21. If you are interested in becoming a lighthouse tour guide or a museum host, come to the Museum and take a free guided lighthouse tour. Learn from the on-site hosts about becoming a Museum Host and a Lighthouse Tour Guide.
Updated Springtime Hours:
Starting on March 4, 2011, the Umpqua River Lighthouse Museum will be open from 10 am – 3 pm every Friday through Sunday, for the months of March and April.
Spring 2011 Whale Watch Week is March 19 – 26:
The Umpqua River Lighthouse Museum will also be open the entire week of Spring 2011 Whale Watch Week. The Lighthouse is located directly across from one of the 26 Whale Watch Spoken Here sites.  During Whale Watch Week, trained volunteers will be at the site from 10 am – 1pm, and can help you spot the migrating gray whales.  Be sure to dress for the weather and bring your binoculars.

Cellist Ralph Stricker-Chapman is one of 3 soloists in the first performance of his own work at the Winter Concert of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO) at 2 P.M. on Sunday afternoon, February 20, in the Pacific Auditorium, located at the Reedsport Community Charter School.

In celebration of the orchestra's tenth season, OCCO will again offer a special ticket price. Purchase of an "early-bird" ticket ($10.00) will admit two persons. Tickets are now on sale at the Reedsport Branch of Umpqua Bank.

"Sinfonia Concertante" is the name of the new piece by Stricker-Chapman, Principal Cellist with OCCO. The four-movement composition is scored for violin, viola and 'cello soloists plus orchestra. Violinist Sigrid Karlstrom, violist Kate Rogers and the composer comprise the trio of soloists. The piece is written in the form used by Mozart and others during the Classical Period (1750 to 1800.)

Born in Minneapolis, Ralph Stricker-Chapman studied cello under Josh Koestenbaum of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra before moving to Eugene and continuing his studies with Steven Pologe at the University of Oregon. He maintains a busy performance schedule, playing frequently with the Eugene Contemporary Chamber Ensemble (of which he is a founding member), Ballet Fantastique, the Oregon Bach Collegium and the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra.

In addition to the featured work, conductors Robin DeVour and John Monks will direct the orchestra in a variety of lighter selections to complement the program.

An impressive line-up of Music, Wineries, Breweries, Food & Craft Vendors are coming to Gardiner, 2½  miles north or Reedsport, this weekend, February 19-20 for the fifth annual CONFLUENCE– A Wine, Beer, Seafood, & Music Festival presented by the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce at the W.F. Jewett School.
The Award Winning Wine, Beer, Seafood & Music Festival - Confluence 2011 – (Confluence, Noun: "coming or flowing together, meeting, or gathering at one point,") will highlight Oregon wines and micro brews, coastal cuisine, and outstanding music performed by seven different bands.
Saturday's hours for Confluence 2011 are noon to 9pm and Sunday's hours are noon to 6pm.  The music line up Saturday is: the rocking sound of Hot Tea Cold, the exceptional guitar playing and keyboards of Peter Giri of the Peter Giri Band, The 2010 Blues Music Award Winner, Soul Blues Artist of the Year Curtis Salgado with Alan Hager, and the rising star of the Northwest, Carrie Cunningham and the Six Shooters.  Sunday's line up includes the ever popular Oregon Coast Lab Band's Evolution, Blues and Rock from Nancy McIntosh & Next Exit Band, and the closing band will be local favorite PBA and the Hot Flashes.  Confluence is honored to have Masters of Ceremonies Paul Biondi and Mark Madden entertaining throughout the festival.
Wineries will be Abiqua Wind Vineyard, Bradley Vineyards, Henry Estates Winery, Misty Oaks Winery, River's Edge Winery, Saginaw Vineyard, and Wild Rose Vineyard, Oregon craft beers will be poured by Deschutes, Ninkasi, and Wakonda Breweries.  Food vendors will be featuring Oregon seafood and other delicacies.  An assortment of craft vendors will be vending their products.
Sunday afternoon, an auction will held.  The top three photographs from the local Photography Contest will be auctioned.  This auction will benefit the Reedsport Branch Library.
Admission price for Saturday is $10 and Sunday is $7.  Weekend passes are $15 and senior discounts are available.  Tickets are available at the door or at The Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce office.  There will be free shuttle bus service available in Winchester Bay, from the Winchester Bay RV Resort, Bay Front Loop and down Beach Blvd, in Reedsport, Circle Drive in front of Reedsport High School, and from the Price 'N Pride parking lot, and in Gardiner at the old IP sawmill lot on both Saturday and Sunday.  There is plenty of free parking available at the event.  This is a 21 and older only festival.  Please check with area motels for event discounts.  For more information, log on to http://www.reedsportcc.org/confluence or contact the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce at 800-247-2155 or (541) 271-3495.

Reedsport Community Charter School students and staff would like to invite the community to join them on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in Pacific Auditorium for a Braves Session Celebration. Reedsport Community Charter School students will be demonstrating what they learned during their recent Braves Session, an innovative session between the first and second semesters that allowed students to immerse themselves in one or two new electives for two and a half weeks. The Braves Session Celebration will include mini-concerts by the marimba ensembles and the RCCS School of Rock; displays of ceramics, photography, writing, language, flower arrangements, piƱatas, German dictionaries, and international cuisine; and a slide show documenting the Braves Session activities.
Braves Session classes were taught by community members and regular staff members and included Digital Photography, Conversational Spanish, Introduction to German, Marimbas and Zimbabwean Culture, Creative Journalism, Youth Teaching Youth, Floral Design, Creative Ceramics, Outdoor Education, Military History, Culinary Cultural Exploration, Geocaching, Rocketry, Film Animation, School of Rock, History of Rock and Roll, Public Construction Projects, and Sports History. Students who were not passing their regular classes received intensive tutoring in graduation literacy or math credit recovery classes during the Braves Session.

Four beautiful photos that "Capture the Spirit of Coastal Douglas" are currently on display and up for silent auction at Umpqua Bank.  All four recently won the top 3 prizes (there was a tie for second place) at the recently held Amateur Photography contest sponsored by the Library Renovation Committee and were the focus of the January First Friday Art Event sponsored by CDABA.  These photos will remain at Umpqua Bank until Friday and then winners of the silent auction will be announced on Sunday, February 20th at around 4 pm at Confluence in the old Jewett school in Gardiner.  This will be right before our hometown band, PBA and the Hotflashes, closes out the Confluence weekend.  So, come to the bank and to Confluence and bid on those photos!  All proceeds benefit the Library renovation.  For more information, contact Jennifer Tymchuk at 541-271-4670.
