WHAT:  Work of orchestra's oldest member on winter program
WHERE:  Pacific Auditorium, located at Reedsport High School
WHEN:    Sunday, February 21 at 2 P.M.
WHO:  Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO)
A composition by Wilke Renwick, at 88, the senior member of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO) will be part of the Group's winter program. The Reedsport concert is at 2 P.M. on Sunday, February 21 in the Pacific Auditorium at Reedsport High School. The specially-priced "early-bird" ticket ($10.00) will admit two persons to the event. Tickets can be purchased at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank. Tickets will also be available one hour before the matinee performance.

Renwick, born in Stockton, California in 1921, began playing French horn at the age of 13. He appeared with a local symphony only three years later. On December 8, 1941, he joined the U. S. Navy and served for 6 years as a Bandsman. He then completed his formal musical education including a bachelor's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music; Renwick then commenced a long career as an orchestra musician.

After more than 30 years with the Colorado Symphony in Denver, Renwick eventually moved with his wife, Janice, to Florence in 1998. He is an OCCO charter member, having played with the orchestra since its inception in 2001. Among his other compositions, his "Dance" for Brass Quintet, is presently the most frequently performed piece in the world for Brass Quintet.

Renwick's work' "On the death of a friend", will open the second half of the concert. Written in 1977, the composition was an elegy for strings and is dedicated to the memory of three close friends. Also featured on this concert will be solo performances by Rebecah Pulsifer, Nathan Helgeson and Kate Rogers, all principal members of OCCO. Rounding out the program are selections by Saint-Saens, Johann Strauss, Sr., Tchaikovsky, and Waldteufel.

Local Toastmaster Earns Top Toastmaster's Award

At a recent Oregon Coast Toastmasters Club meeting, Douglas Mecham received his Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award. This award is only provided to those Toastmasters who have completed the requirements in both the Communications track and the Leadership track. It represents the highest award that a member can earn after having satisfied requirements including giving forty speeches, completing four communication programs, ten leadership projects, serving as club officer as well as district officer, participating in five programs and serving as a new club sponsor.  Doug was one of the sponsors of the new Coast Toasties Club in Reedsport and is currently a member of this club in addition to the one in Waldport.

Doug Mecham joined Toastmasters about five years ago to prefect his communications and speaking abilities then to put new techniques into practice speaking at Toastmasters Clubs and leading the Speech Craft Seminar. He has compiled a Toastmasters help booklet on Speaking Tips. Prior awards earned leading up to DTM include the Competent Communicator, Competent Leader, Advanced Communicator Bronze, Silver and Gold, Advanced Leader Bronze and Silver.

Doug Mecham has shown what can be accomplished and that challenges should be looked at as opportunities. His DTM award represents his growth as a person. It is a challenge for other Toastmasters to complete their next awards leading to their DTM. Of the millions of Toastmasters worldwide, there are only nine thousand who have achieved the DTM level. Congratulations Doug Mecham.

Anyone interested in finding out more about how Toastmasters can help them become a more effective communicator, please join them at their next meeting, Thursday, February 11. They meet every Thursday at 6:30 pm at the Reedsport School District Board Room, 100 Ranch Road in Reedsport. For more information call 541-759-2055
