CONFLUENCE 2010 – A Wine, Beer, Seafood, Music Festival 
 
An impressive line-up of Music, Wineries, Breweries, Food & Craft Vendors come to Gardiner 21/2 miles north or Reedsport this weekend, February 12-14th
 for the fourth annual CONFLUENCE– A Wine, Beer, Seafood, Music Festival presented by the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce at the W.F. Jewett School.
 
The Award Winning Wine, Beer, Seafood & Music Festival - Confluence 2010 – (Confluence, Noun: "coming or flowing together, meeting, or gathering at one point,") kicks off the event with Confluence's "Wine Taster's Dinner," at 6 pm featuring a four course of gourmet dinner by Bedrock's Catering Services and wine pairings by Henry Estates Winery.  Henry Estates Winery will be offering case discounts on wine at the dinner.  Live music will accompany the dinner by the "Worn Out Frets."  Tickets for the Wine Taster's Dinner are on sale for $65 at the Chamber office.  Start Valentine's weekend Friday night with this exceptional Wine Taster's Dinner and then enjoys the rest of the weekend tasting, Oregon wines and micro brews, sampling coastal cuisine and listening and dancing to outstanding music performed by seven different bands.
 
Saturday's hours for Confluence 2010 are extended until 9pm starting at Noon and Sunday's hours until 7pm also starting at Noon.  The music line up Saturday is Hot Tea Cold, Mark Madden and the Ferguson Brothers, The Michael Tracy Band, and Paul Biondi and Band.  Sunday's line up includes local favorites PBA and the Hot Flashes, the Young Bucs and returning from Las Vegas are the Speaks Brothers, known as Wild Horse Theatre.  Returning as the Masters of Ceremonies are Paul Biondi and Mark Madden.
 
Wineries and Breweries attending will be Deschutes, Ninkasi, and Wakonda Breweries, Abiqua Wind Vineyard, Bradley Vineyards, Henry Estates, Old Coyote Winery, Pyrenees Winery, River's Edge Winery, Saginaw Vineyard, and Wild Rose Vineyard.  Food vendors will be featuring Oregon Seafood and other delicacies and an assortment of craft vendors will be present.  Admission price for Saturday is $10 and Sunday $7.  Weekend passes are $15 and senior discounts are available.  Tickets are available at The Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce office.  There will be free shuttle bus service available; in Winchester Bay from the Winchester Bay RV Resort and Bay Front Loop, in Reedsport from Circle Drive at Reedsport High School, and Price 'N Pride and in Gardiner at the old IP sawmill lot on Saturday and Sunday.  There is also plenty of free parking available at the event.  This is a 21 and older only festival.  Please check with area motels for event discounts.   For more information, log on to http://www.reedsportcc.org/confluence or contact the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-247-2155.

WHAT:  Bassoonist featured in Winter orchestra concert
WHERE:  Pacific Auditorium, located at Reedsport High School

WHO:  Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO)

Nate Helgeson, Principal Bassoonist of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO) will be featured in the Group's Winter program. The Reedsport concert is at 2 P.M. on Sunday, February 21 in the Pacific Auditorium at Reedsport High School. The specially-priced "early-bird" ticket ($10.00) will admit two persons to the event. Tickets can be purchased at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank. Tickets will also be available at the door one hour before the matinee performance.

Helgeson is a graduate student in bassoon performance at the University of Oregon. He also is a member of the Salem Chamber Orchestra and an alumni of the Portland Youth symphony, He has appeared with chamber groups at the New England conservatory of Music, and next month will be performing at the Longy School of Music, in Cambridge, MA, as part of a faculty recital. In the spring he will be auditioning for future educational and performance opportunities in the Eastern U.S. and Europe.

Helgeson will give a performance of Devienne's Bassoon Concerto in b Flat. Originally attributed to Mozart, musical scholarship in the 20th Century has determined the correct authorship of this composition.

In addition, heard on this program will be solo works by Rebecah Pulsifer and Kate Rogers, both principal members of OCCO. A short piece for strings by Wilke Renwick, Co-principal Horn and OCCO'S senior member, is also a part of this concert. Rounding out the program are selections by Saint-Saens, Johann Strauss, Sr., Tchaikovsky, and Waldteufel.

First Friday to feature Quilt Art
 
Coastal Douglas Arts & Business Alliance (CDABA) announces its monthly art event – First Friday . . . Art for Everyone for March 5th.  The First Friday event will feature Quilt Art and will be hosted by Theresa Chickering.
 
First Friday – March 5th - 5-7 pm.  March's event will be held at the Family Resource Center, 5 St. John's Way, Reedsport (off of Ranch Road, across from the cemetery).
 
This art event will include the Quilt Art work of Theresa Chickering, Billie Shannon, Michelle Petrofes and possibly others.  Please contact Theresa if you would like more information 271-4608.

Carleene Compton, Chair of Lower Umpqua Hospital Foundation announces the creation of the "Beacon Award" which will recognize voluntary efforts to improve the health, wellness and safety of the community. 
 
            Letters of nomination must be delivered to Lower Umpqua Hospital Foundation by Tuesday, April 6, 2010.
 
            Both individuals and groups are eligible for recognition. Lower Umpqua Hospital Foundation will make a decision based on the nominations received. Says Compton,
"The purpose of the Beacon Award is to honor those who do their part to improve the health status of the community. The Foundation believes there are many in our community worthy of recognition."
 
            The recipient(s) will be recognized at a reception at Lower Umpqua Hospital on May 10, 2010 as part of Hospital Week festivities.
 
            Letters of nomination, which are due April 6, should include an explanation of what his person or group has done to improve the health status of the community, what part of the community has been served and to what result, and any other pertinent details. Letters can be mailed to Lower Umpqua Hospital Foundation, 600 Ranch Rd., Reedsport or left at the reception desk addressed to Lower Umpqua Hospital Foundation Beacon Award. Rising Tide Live! announces a casting for parts in an upcoming production, "A Nice Family Gathering" by Phil Olson.  The comedy concerns a Thanksgiving Day get together of a strange family  including the deceased father who wants to control a bit more and make some amends.  Several of the parts have been cast with local RTL! members and the audition will be for:

Amanda Rice will be directing and this will be the fourth full production of Rising Tide Live!  The production is expected to take place during the second and third week of May.

Have you been watching the silent bidding on the top 3 pictures from the Library Fundraising Photo Contest that have graciously been displayed at area banks the past few weeks? 
 
Are you secretly hoping to get in the last bid on "The Grizzly", "Umpqua Bridge", or "Sparrow Park Road?"  Well, you have your final chance this weekend at Confluence!  The pictures will be on display and will be open to further bidding at the Wine Taster's Dinner on Friday, Feb. 12th starting at 6 p.m. 
 
On Saturday and Sunday, you will find them displayed in Theresa Chickering's booth at Confluence and they will still be open for bids.  Sunday afternoon's focus is "the local community" and that seems like a perfect time to announce the winners. 
 
So bring your Valentine and listen to some great local bands, eat out courtesy of local vendors, and hear the announcement between the last two sets of the day (between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m.) as to who will bring those wonderful photos home!

Instructor Bio:
 
Peter Kummerfeldt is the founder of, and chief instructor for Outdoorsafe Inc. an organization that conducts outdoor safety skills seminars, survival training programs and travel safety seminars throughout the United States and Internationally. He is a graduate of the Air Force Survival Instructor Training School and has served as an instructor at the Basic Survival School, Spokane
 
Washington, the Arctic Survival School, Fairbanks Alaska and the Jungle Survival School, the Republic of the Philippines. He also served for 12 years as the Survival Training Director at the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado. He retired from the Air Force in 1995 after 30 years of service.
 
The Tioga Chapter of the Oregon Hunters Assoc. has scheduled a 4 hour survival seminar with Peter and would like to invite you to attend. Please let us know how many people from your agency or organization that would be in attendance. We are planning on using the Marshfield Auditorium. He gives a life changing seminar for anyone who spends time in the outdoors.
