The Ford Family Foundation is once again looking to bring its Ford Institute Leadership Program for rural communities to the City of Reedsport.  Each class selects a project that they work on together.  The Institute provides up to a $5,000 match in support of the project.  Past Ford classes have been involved in such projects as the auditorium renovation, the installation of play equipment at Henderson Park, and the recent improvements at Barrone Park.

Typically 25-30 people participate in each class, which is made up of members of the community.  The age of the class members has ranged from 16 to 80+ years old and have a diverse background from high school students, retired adults, business owners, and many more walks of life.  Class members can reside in Reedsport, Gardiner, Winchester Bay, Loon Lake, and other surrounding areas.

The curriculum concepts include:  Community capacity and social capital, personality types and leadership styles, community development models, Catalytic Leadership Model, asset mapping, group development, models for group decision making, communication strategies, and volunteerism.

WHO:             Rotary Club of Reedsport
CONTACT:    Kathleen Miller 272-2101

Coastal Douglas Has Talent! - An Evening of Success!

Coastal Douglas does indeed have talent!  Thank you to everyone who came out to see the talent show hosted by the Rotary Club of Reedsport on Saturday, November 7, 2009.  Thanks also go to everyone who helped make this program a success—Joe Zelinski, emcee; Charlie Gardner, Clarice Otis, and Karen Tibbles, judges; Reedsport Chamber of Commerce-Ambassadors, ushers; Designs by Meshelle–Meshelle Lee, artist for posters and program; River Bank Guest House (Rick Patsche)–lodging; and the high school students who earned community service credits by helping out.

Thanks also for the participation of the community banks which added to the line-up of events for this year's program--Bank of America-gift bags to participants, Oregon First Community Credit Union–popcorn, and Umpqua Bank-sponsor of "Name that Tune."

Appreciation goes out to Lorilee Grizzle, the 2008 favorite act for her encore performance and to the members of PBA & The Hot Flashes for warming of the audience and keeping everyone entertained while the audience votes were counted.

The grant provided by the Douglas County Cultural Coalition made it possible for local students to receive free admission and to be introduced to the performing arts.

The media coverage provided by Copy Cat (Coffee Break), Community Email Blast by Jamie Swafford, Gig Magazine,  KDUNE - 1030 AM Radio, KJMX - 99.5 FM Radio, and the Umpqua Post was very helpful in making the community aware and getting the word out about the event.

Finally—keeping the ticket price at $5.00 for this event was made possible by the sponsorships.  A special thank you goes out to all the sponsors who are very important in making the Rotary Club's vision a reality by helping raise money for the various service and community projects of the Rotary Club.  The following sponsors are truly appreciated:  Safeway, Southern Oregon Sanitation, Inc., Charlie & Dee Dee Murphy, Dunes Family HealthCare, Fullhart Insurance, Harbor Light Family Restaurant, Jim Mix Financial Services, Kitty's Kitchen is Christmas Forever, Landing Lounge, Les Schwab Tire Center, Lower Umpqua Hospital, Mindpower Gallery, Oregon First Community Credit Union, Reedsport Pharmacy, Signs Unlimited, Stephen H. Miller, PC, Theresa Hart, and Waterfront Tavern & Grill.

It may take a village to raise a child---it certainly takes a community to put on such a successful show, one that was enjoyed by all.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!
