Worldwide Free Comic Book Day Comes to Florence with Comics for All Ages!

She Said Gifts He Said Comics in Florence is one of thousands of comic book shops around the world celebrating the comic book art form on Saturday, May 2nd. On Free Comic Book Day, over two million comic books will be given away by participating stores, introducing as many people as possible to the wonders of comic books!

"The wide array of comic books being published today ensures that readers of all ages — children, teens, and adults – can find something appropriate that will stir their imaginations," said Ron Schmidt, co-owner of She Said Gifts He Said Comics.

Now in its eighth year, Free Comic Book Day has proven to be a smashing success, spreading the word that comics are terrific reading. "Even if you have never picked up a comic book, stop into She Said Gifts He Said Comics, because you never know what you will end up finding."

"We at She Said Gifts He Said Comics want to spread the word that comics are perfect for today's times," Schmidt continued. "Comic books and graphic novels are considered hip, hot and smart." Comic Books have propelled to the front ranks of pop culture, many being adapted into movies. Wolverine hits the big screen on May 1st, the day before Free Comic Book Day. The first weekend of May is going to be a big day in the comic book world. And May 2 is just one week short of our first anniversary in business, so we will have some bargains to celebrate that event as well."

Four selections by Australian-born Percy Grainger will begin the Spring Pops concert of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO). The Reedsport concert, which closes OCCO'S eighth season, will be a matinee on Sunday, May 3 at 2 P.M. at the Pacific Auditorium of Reedsport High School. The delightful tunes that open the concert are all based on this musical form and include the well-known "Danny Boy." Also in the first half are three original pieces by Florence composer, Charles Perkins.

WHERE:  Reedsport, Oregon

The Reedsport School District is one of ten applicants awarded an Oregon Public Charter School Incentive Planning Grant. The successful grant written by Tricia Law and Jim Akre was one of twenty-eight applications reviewed by the Oregon Department of Education.

The Planning Grant will provide the Reedsport Junior/Senior High School $55,000 for the planning and preparation to institute innovative instruction and programs for grades 7 -12. The focus of the Reedsport Community Charter School will be threefold: (1) each student will have a personalized education plan, (2) elective classes will partner with local community entities, and (3) multiple learning styles will be addressed in core classes. Following the initial planning work the Charter School is preapproved for Implementation Phases One and Two and access to an additional $450,000 for the purchase of materials and training to implement the new innovative program.

"This is a great opportunity for the Junior/Senior High to make a big jump forward in working with the community to significantly enhance and enrich the education program for our students." said Reedsport Superintendent Ike Launstein.
