PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION #`1 of 4
Tsunamis Can Happen Any Time – Drill Friday To Prepare
On Friday, May 31st at 10am, residents from Gardiner to Hauser will participate in an area-wide tsunami evacuation drill. Organized by Tsunami Outreach Oregon and executed by local police, sheriff, and fire departments up and down the coast, Friday's evacuation drill will stimulate the response to a 9.0 magnitude Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and the ensuing tsunami.
This kind of local earthquake will someday cause a local tsunami that will affect many areas along the coast and inland as well as it follows low lying rivers and shoreline. Individuals in the inundation zones will have 15-20 minutes to make it to high ground before the wave reaches them.
The Dept. of Geology and Mineral Industries, through its Tsunami Outreach Program, has produced new Tsunami Evacuation Maps that show the hazard areas for both a local and a distant tsunami. Residents need to remember that a distant earthquake causes a distant tsunami. These distant events will affect many areas, but not with the same effect as the local Cascadia event.
What should people do for the drill on Friday? ….. First of all, recognize this as a local earthquake of 9.0 and drop, cover, and hold 2-5 minutes for the simulated shaking of the quake. If you are not in the inundation zone you would just move to a safe location where nothing would fall on you. If you are in the inundation hazard zone you would move to the nearest assembly area. Remember that after the quake, chances are you will not be able to drive, so practice by walking to the assembly area. Please be careful crossing streets as the rest of the traffic may not know about the drill.
Tsunami Assembly Areas:
Gardiner …. The assembly area is St. Mary's Episcopal Church parking lot.
Reedsport …. The assembly areas are: Crestview and N. Hills intersection; the end of Scholfield Drive; or the corner of 12th and Fir behind the Credit Union.
Winchester Bay …. Part way up Appian Way; up Winchester Bay Hill at the sign on Hwy 101; Lake Marie picnic area; or the trail off the dunes at Clear Lake. If someone is on the dunes, they should remember that every foot in, or every foot up will help them survive the tsunami.
Local Law Enforcement, Fire Crews and CERT personnel will be available to help people get to the right place during the drill. Each assembly area will have maps and additional information for those who participate. Information is also available at: www.OregonTsunami.org or by calling Terry at 503-307-5734.

"LEADING LADIES", BY KEN LUDWIG
FLORENCE EVENTS CENTER - 715 QUINCE STREET - FLORENCE, OREGON
JUNE 7, 8, 14, 15 AT 7:00 PM (FRIDAY & SATURDAY PERFORMANCES)
JUNE 9, 16 AT 2:00 PM (SUNDAY PERFORMANCES)
IT'S ABOUT TIME PRODUCTIONS
JUDY ADAMS - IATPRODUCTIONS@HOTMAIL.COM
It's About Time Productions, Florence's new theatre company, is excited to present Leading Ladies, another laugh-a-minute romp written by Ken Ludwig, author of last year's hilarious show at the Florence Playhouse, Lend Me a Tenor.
Directors Judy Adams and Victoria Seitzinger have assembled a first rate cast of characters including Mat Korso, Florence's favorite funny man, who in this case is not always a funny MAN.  Mat will have you in stitches in this sidesplitting dual role.  Alex Grady, who is also playing an unusual dual role, plays his reluctant sidekick.
Joining them is local veterinarian, Dr. John Bachmann as stiff, uptight minister, Duncan, who is engaged to be married to future heiress to her aunt's fortune, Meg, played by Tara Szalewski.  Tara, who hails from Reedsport, is a newcomer to Florence theatre.
Audrey, the young, soon-to-be roller skating waitress and friend of the family is played by another newcomer to Florence theater, Tiffany Gibbons.
Daniel Ferenczi plays Butch, who is in love with Audrey. Daniel is also from Reedsport and is no stranger to Florence theater.  You may remember him from his performance as Lumiere in last year's production of Beauty and the Beast.
Chuck Knorr will be playing Doc, a curmudgeon and barely adequate country doctor who is also Butch's father.
And last, but certainly not least, is Florence, the rich aunt who's leaving part of her fortune to Meg, as well as her other two other long, lost relatives.  Florence is played by Cathy Dupont, who is no stranger to Florence theater.
This unforgettable show will be performed on the flat floor of the Florence Events Center June 7, 8, 9 & 14, 15, 16.   Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7 pm and Sunday matinees begin at 2 pm.  Get your tickets early.  Seating is limited.  Tickets are $15 and available online at www.eventcenter.org. You may also purchase tickets at the box office Monday through Friday 10 – 4 PM, or call 541-997-1994.
