PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION     #`4 of 4

WHO Umpqua Community College Musical / Drama Department
WHAT: Choir Girls - A New Musical
After the show  a Talk-Back with the artists
WHEN: Saturday, June 2, 2012  6:30
WHERE: Pacific Auditorium  2260 Longwood, Reedsport
COST: $5.00 or a donation of non-perishable food

The "Choir Girls" are coming!

At the Pacific Auditorium, 6:30pm,  this Saturday.  The Umpqua Community College production will be its first showing in preparation for the premiere in August on UCC's Roseburg campus as part of the Oregon Music Theater Festival.

Subsidized and co-sponsored by Rising Tide Live! and Coastal Douglas Arts and Business Alliance, the cost of a ticket is $5.00 (or as an alternative prepackaged food for the local food bank)  Written and directed by Jason Heald, UCC's Music Director, Choir Girl adds to his prolific volume of compositions and is his seventh full musical.  After the production there will be a Talk-Back between the artists and the audience to discuss the plot, the style and the effect of the evening.  This will assist the producers in fine tuning future performances.

Please come and enjoy "Choir Girls" as you sneak into the church of St. Paul in the Mall during a rehearsal and meet the zany cast of characters. "Choir Girls" is a touching and hilarious 'tell-it-like-it-is' look at the lives of a group of female friends.  It is the story of the intertwining spirit of a group of women whose relationships with men lead to confusion and passion . . . . not the least of which includes the choir's male accompanist.  "Choir Girls" offers sacred and secular musical parodies while mixing the sounds of classic Broadway, Motown and reggae. It leaves no doubt that sometimes even those with a direct line to the Almighty need a little assistance here on earth.

WHERE: Southwestern Oregon Community College,  Coos Bay
COST: Class is free  manual is $22.50 and federal test is $15.00

Before the next incident or disaster in our area, come join with some Coastal Douglas residents to learn the methods of operating a ham radio.  Ham radio is a radio communications system operating above the AM frequency band by amateurs and can be an essential tool when there is a loss of normal means of communication and to assist in emergency preparedness.

These classes are free and will be held at Southwestern Oregon Community College at 1988 Newmark Avenue in Coos Bay (Room #10 Sitkum) on Saturday June 2nd and June 9th from 9 - 4pm.  The instructing group (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) would like to have reservations so then can order materials. While the instruction is free there is a manual which costs $22.50  (Kent at KDUNE has some for $20.00

The instructors have also set up a test in order to obtain a license at the North Bend Library (June 21th at 6:15pm) which is at a cost of $15.00/  As a bit of an incentive the Friends of Winchester Bay will pay for three tests for the Coastal Douglas Group based on a lottery of those from this area who have received their license.  We had worked to have the instruction in Reedsport but this seems the soonest and closest class we will obtain for a while.  A group is also working on a method to obtain equipment that is affordable.

Come assist our community.

There is also a class in Reedsport on May 24th and 25th.

To register for the class contact: Dan Bissell at 541-347-4580
For more information and the location of the classes call Joe Coyne 541-271-2103

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION  #2 of 7

WHAT: 61st Annual National Day of Prayer
WHERE:  Pacific Auditorium located at Reedsport Community Charter School.
WHEN:    Thursday, May 3  7:00 pm
WHO: Lower Umpqua Ministerial Association
Contact Person:  Terry Plotz 541-271-4414 or 541-662-0095
The citizens of Reedsport and the surrounding area are encouraged to join the Pastors of the Lower Umpqua Ministerial Association in praying for our country on this year's National Day of Prayer, Thursday, May 3. We will be gathering at 7:00 pm at the Pacific Auditorium located at Reedsport Community Charter School. The Concert of Prayer format will include short times of worship mixed into many different prayer topics and formats led by the pastors of many different churches.

The National Day of Prayer is a vital part of our national heritage. Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has continued through our history. In 1952 a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual, national day of Prayer. In 1988 the law was amended to permanently set it on the first Thursday of every May.

On this National Day of Prayer, Americans come together to humble ourselves and turn to the Lord on behalf of our country, knowing that it is in God that we trust, not ourselves. This years theme is from Psalm 33 verse 12 "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance."  With so many needs and so much going on in the world, what better thing to do than gather and turn to God on behalf of our country, community, families, churches and schools.  For more information call any member of the ministerial association or Terry Plotz at 541-271-4414.

A Spring concert matinee will mark the end of the eleventh season of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO). The Reedsport concert is scheduled for Sunday, May, 6, at 2 P.M. The concert will be held at the Pacific Auditorium, located on the campus of the Reedsport Community Charter Schools.

Tickets for this program are now available at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank. They can be purchased during regular business hours at the bank's Information Desk through Friday, May, 4. Admission price is $10 per person. Tickets will also be on sale at the door one hour before concert time.

Appearances by several Oregon jazz soloists are a special part of this event. Stu Curtis will be heard on alto sax in the John Monk's arrangement of "Gone with the Wind." Guitarist Devern Pinnock will play Astor Piazzolla's haunting "Oblivion" accompanied by the Strings in another Monks' chart. Monks will also appear as Bass Trumpet soloist in Hoagy Carmichael's "One morning in May," arranged by OCCO Conductor, Robin DeVour.

The second half of the program will be devoted to theme songs and popular hits of the Big Bands, including Les Brown's "I've got my love to keep me warm," Glenn Miller's "String of Pearls," Claude Thornhill's "Snowfall" and several others.
