Douglas County Emergency Management, Douglas County Amateur Radio and the Port of Umpqua will sponsor classes for licensure as a Technician Class Amateur radio license. The class will be held on Thursday, May 24th and Friday, May 25th from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the Port of Umpqua Annex Building. The address is 1841 Winchester Avenue in Reedsport, Oregon. On Thursday evening there will be a power point presentation of test questions from the ARRL license manual and general amateur radio information and culture. The second evening there will be time for questions, and then students will go online and take practice exams, with time to answer any questions that come up.
The class is presented at no charge, but students will need to purchase the licensing study manual ahead of time through Kent Abendroth. It would be very helpful for students to study the manual prior to the class.
Before the next incident or disaster in our area, come join with some Coastal Douglas residents to learn the methods of operating a ham radio. Ham radio is a radio communications system operated by amateurs and can be an essential tool when there is a loss of normal means of communication and to assist in emergency preparedness.
Kent Abendroth of KDUN radio in Reedsport is the point of contact for information and/or questions regarding the training. He can be reached at 541-271-5386.
