For the Sake of Reedsport, Vote NO on 10-119

by Tom Tymchuk

In the upcoming May election the voters of Reedsport will vote on a ballot measure which deserves to be defeated. Please join me and vote NO on Ballot Measure 10-119.

Measure 10-119 would put the city in the likely position of defaulting on its current wastewater loans with the state or in making drastic cuts to needed city programs. If this measure passes and the city can not pay off its loans from the state, the State of Oregon could act in several ways: It could withhold other funds due to the City of Reedsport, it could declare all the outstanding debts (plus interest) due immediately, and it could take over the city’s wastewater collection system, setting and collecting the rates and fees. If the city were to default on its current loans, it would also make it very unlikely that the city would be able to take advantage of state funding options in the future. As a former Mayor of Reedsport, forcing such a calamity is disturbing to me.

The sponsors of Measure 10-119 seek a path of great harm to the city of Reedsport today and well into the future.

Were this measure to pass, major cuts in city services would likely occur. The police department, the library, the Senior Center, the Umpqua Discovery Center and city parks all would face the ax. City staffing, which is already at a near 20-year low, would surely see significant cuts.

Every two years, the voters of Reedsport have the opportunity to have their voice heard when they elect their mayor and city counselors. That is the time-honored way of dedicated city council. The sponsors of this measure have seen their favored candidates defeated each time they have run for office. Unable to get elected, they now wish to change the City Charter to get their political way. They are attempting to make an end-run around good representative government.

Measure 10-119 would put the city at great present and future financial risk. It also circumvents the elective process. The sponsors of this measure have an ax to grind, and that ax is not good for Reedsport.

I encourage all Reedsport voters to resist this destructive attempt and vote NO on measure 10-119.

Who: Old Towne Reedsport Merchant Association
What:  2012 Old Towne Hanging Basket Planting Time
Where:  Old Towne - Bill Karcher's - Orca Gallery
When:  Friday, May 11th 9:00 AM and Second Planting if necessary, Friday May 18th 9:00 AM

This is our 5th year!  Can you believe it? Boy does the time fly!  We are fund raising again and for each $25 donation you make for the flowers, you will receive a drawing ticket to possibly win a beautiful hanging basket.  But just not any hanging basket!  It is a 40-pound hanging basket identical to the ones we will be planting downtown on May 11th and 18th!  So many people have asked to buy, but we've never allowed it.  So, this year the committee thought that maybe we should give one away and make some money to invest in the flowers too!  Sounds good to me!  So, anyone who is interested can send their donations to OTRMA, PO BOX 543, Reedsport, Oregon 97467 or call Kathi at (541) 271-3044.

Even if you don't want to win, your donations are gladly accepted as it takes 35 plants to fill just one basket.  Last year we planted 2,310 plants, used two-cubic yards of potting soil, one-cubic-foot Perlite, and ten pounds of time-release fertilizer. The Old Towne Flower Basket Project is a major contribution to our community. So please help in anyway you can.  We also need volunteer basket planters on May 11th and 18th.  Call and sign up!  Please mail checks to OTRMA, PO BOX 345, Reedsport,Oregon or call me (541) 271-3044.  Happy Spring!  Kathi

What:  Bench Project Completion Celebration
Where:  Old Towne Reedsport, Next to Post Office
When:  Friday, May 4th, 1:00 PM

Come join us on Friday May 4th in Old Towne Reedsport to celebrate our completion of the Bench Project.  It has been really fun and a great learning experience for us and we would like to invite the community to attend our celebration event.  We will be thanking the people who donated everything from soup to nuts.  We are also going to be thanking those who purchased bricks to help raise the $500 we needed so that the Ford Foundation would match another $500. Without all these people helping out, the nearly $12,000  project wouldn't have been so successful.  So successful in fact that there is now a bench in each community of Reedsport, Lakeside, Gardiner, and Winchester Bay.  So, take a few minutes and stop by for the Celebration.  "Life's a Bench, Take a Seat".

Hello Braves fans!

This Friday is the annual Jack Blum Invitational Track Meet at Ruppe Field.

This year marks 50 years since the 1962 Braves won State Championships under Coach Blum's guidance.

As always, we are seeking volunteers to help make the events run smoothly and efficiently.

Our Ruppe Field is viewed as a top-notch facility by the increasing number of schools we compete against. This year we will be hosting 11 teams.

The great volunteer support we receive from the community helps us earn a great reputation for running a well-managed event.

We hope you will consider giving a few hours of your time Friday afternoon to help in our effort.

If you can help, please contact RHS track coach Jennifer Wright at this address:  JWright@reedsport.k12.or.us
