Mindpower Gallery in Reedsport hosts "Time"
A Traveling Oregon Prison Art Show

It's the kind of show that takes a special set of circumstances to create.
Sometimes it takes something experienced to inspire an event to begin
with. In this case, it took both. "Time" ,The Oregon State Prisoner
Traveling Art Show, got it's start through it's own set of circumstances.
The idea was started at a board meeting of the Coos Art Museum, but took
a couple of years and the incarceration of a son of one of the members
before the idea really took off.

Victoria Tierney recalls: "When Blake got arrested and incarcerated, my
interest in prison art perked up." But back when a fellow board member
suggested that she consider curating a prison art show she remembers
feeling that her time was already spoken for; she wasn't motivated to
start another volunteer project.

Of course, that was then and "Time" the current prison art show, is now in
it's fourth year and has made it's way to Reedsport, Or. where it will be
exhibited at the Mindpower Gallery in downtown Reedsport from June 1st, to
July 9th . The exhibit was given the name, Tierney says, because when
the artwork started to arrive, they were struck by the extraordinary
attention to detail in a great many of the pieces . This set Tierney to
pondering the meaning of Time. She says, "These men have been 'given
time', quite literally; they are 'doing time' and 'serving time'.

Time is a precious resource and Tierney says she would like to encourage
these people to have a focus, so that they can do something with this time
they've been given.

Paul Tice, program coordinator for Restorative Justice Through the Arts,
believes Tierney's work is an important part of the process. A former
inmate, Tice now lives in Portland, working in drafting and 3D animation.
He spends his weekends promoting prison arts programs which he hopes will
help restore men and women back into the community. "Some will develop
art careers and some will just use it as a coping mechanism while they're
in there," Tice said.

Tierney says visitors to the 'Time' exhibit will find a variety of
drawings and paintings from 16 artists representing 6 of the 13 prison
facilities in Oregon, including highly skilled representational pieces of
animals and nature to sophisticated abstracts.

Viewers may want to 'Take the Time' to view this exhibit, at the
Mindpower Gallery in Reedsport, as it is one of the few exhibition spaces
capable of showing all 85 pieces together in the traveling show. The
Mindpower Gallery is located at 417 Fir Ave, Reedsport, Or. 97467 .

Gallery hours are Tuesday thru Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A special
reception will be held during the 3rd Friday artwalk in downtown
Reedsport on June 17th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information call
