WHAT:  Tar Wars Poster Contest Winners
Winners of the Tar Wars poster contest to promote tobacco-free messages were announced at Highland Elementary on Friday noon, April 1st.  First prize, an iPod shuffle, was garnered by Essie Cardoso for her oversized "You're pretty smart & cool" design.  Second prize went to Macey Hall for her "Wishing for a healthier world" poster, and third place went to Rislun Hall for her colorful "We'll never chew" design.  The 3 posters will be sent to the statewide Oregon Academy of Family Practice contest next week
Tar Wars is a tobacco-free education program administered by the American Academy of Family Physicians that increases fourth- and fifth-grade students' awareness of attitudes about tobacco use and the effects of tobacco on the body. Since it was established in 1988, Tar Wars has reached more than 8 million children with its tobacco-free message.
The Tar Wars program culminates with its annual poster contest, which encourages children to create posters that emphasize the positive aspects of not using tobacco.

WHAT:  Random Acts Fundraiser for Haiti Tsunami Relief
"My name is Tahni Nikitins. I am a twenty-one year old college student of undecided major, I work the front desk at a local hotel, and I have the opportunity to partake in a pretty amazing adventure. Let me tell you a little bit about it.
In 2010, Haiti was hit by a devastating magnitude seven earthquake. The people of Haiti are still struggling to put their world back together, and are still waiting on the much needed international aid which was promised. In response to this tragedy, the charity organization Random Acts ( therandomact.org ) ran a fundraiser called "Run Misha Run" in which one of the founders ran a one man marathon asking for pledges. The run raised nearly $85,000 which went not only to funding aid in Haiti, but also to Pakistani flood relief. This year, Random Acts is returning to Haiti.
With all that is happening in the world it's pretty easy to forget about last year's tragedies. But Random Acts has made a promise to be source of continued support in Haiti, especially Jacmel, where they will be returning in June with a team of forty to build a multi-purpose community center. The center will act not only as an orphanage to shelter some of Jacmel's homeless children, but also as a micro lending center and school, in addition to housing a sustainable fresh water fish farm to provide a ready source of protein to the children who will be housed and fed there. I, and many others like me, have the opportunity to be on the team which will help to build this amazing center.
Here is where you come in. Random Acts is running what I like to think of as a derby. In essence, it's a race to be one of the forty team members who will join Random Acts on the journey to Haiti to build the orphanage. To be one of the forty, I have to do some fund raising. The goal is $5000. The first forty to reach this goal earn a place on the team going to Haiti this coming June. The $5000 raised goes directly to funding the project and to funding Japanese disaster relief. As of April fourth, we had 78 days left to raise $5000, and I have faith that I can make it happen with your help.
So here I am, asking you lovely strangers for just a little bit of help. If you want to help, know that you don't have to give much - even just a couple of dollars gets me closer to the goal. And of course, don't forget that your donation is tax deductible! ("Your donation to a US-Based 501(c)3 charitable organization through Crowdrise is 100% tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Network for Good provides an electronic receipt at the time of the donation that you should try not to lose but we can send another if you do." -- from the Crowdrise website, where all of the fund raising is happening)
If you feel the urge to help out, I strongly encourage you to listen to that urge! All you have to do is follow this link to my Hope to Haiti page ( http://www.crowdrise.com/hopetohaiti1/fundraiser/TahniNikitins ) and hit the "Donate" button. You can also find some more information about the project right there on the page or the Hope to Haiti page on Random Acts' website.
If I am unable to raise the full $5000, that's OK, and I am going to tell you why: even if I don't reach the goal and don't get to go, all of the money that we will have collectively raised will go directly to helping build this orphanage, with its school, micro lending center, and sustainable fish farm. Even if I don't get to go, I am so excited to play a part in helping to make this happen - I hope you'll join me."
