Violist Rafael Videira will step to the podium to conduct in the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra (OCCO) Winter program scheduled for 2 P.M. on Sunday afternoon, February 20, in the Pacific Auditorium, located at the Reedsport Community Charter School.
In celebration of the orchestra's tenth season, OCCO will again offer a special ticket price. Purchase of an "early-bird" ticket ($10.00) will admit two persons. Tickets are now on sale at the Reedsport Branch of Umpqua Bank.
Maestro Videira will direct a new work by Ralph Stricker-Chapman, Principal Cellist with OCCO. The composer will also be a soloist along with violinist, Sigrid Karlstrom and violist Kate Rogers. "Sinfonie Concertante" is in four movements, and is in the form used by Mozart and others during the Classical Period (1750 to 1800.)
The versatile Videira is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Oregon. He holds a Masters degree in Musical performance, viola, from the University of New Mexico. He has studied conducting at both graduate institutions. A native of Brazil, Videira spends his Summers (Winters in South America) teaching violin, viola and chamber music to orphaned children from the Brazilian countryside.
In addition to the featured work, Conductors John Monks and Robin DeVour, will lead the group in a variety of selections by Chabrier, Coates, Copland, Guiraud and Granados. Concertmaster for OCCO is Florence violinist Barbara Wilcox.
