In the world of opera and operetta, orchestras play a supportive role. Not only do they accompany soloists, choruses and dancers, they also provide musical pictures to set the mood, follow the action and/or to remind the opera goers of what has gone before. These short pieces are called Overtures, intermezzi and the like. Often, they are heard while the curtain is closed.
Music that demonstrates the unique contribution of the orchestra to opera is the subject of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra Fall concert. "A night at the opera" will be heard at 2 P.M. matinee on Sunday, December 12 at Pacific Auditorium.
In celebration of their fourth year of bringing concerts to Reedsport audiences, the ensemble will again offer a special ticket price. Purchase of an "early-bird" ticket ($10.00) will admit two persons to the event. Tickets are now on sale at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank. This price will not be available on the concert date. Tickets at the door will revert to the usual cost of $10 per person.
Conductors Robin DeVour, and John Monks lead the group in a wide variety of famous opera selections by such composers as Bizet, Gluck, Rossini, Saint-Saëns, Schubert and others. Operetta pieces including works by Victor Herbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan will also be heard. Concertmaster for OCCO is Florence violinist Barbara Wilcox.

There is a growing recognition of the ways that community conditions impact individual health and the health of entire communities. Research has shown that our surroundings matter--where we live, work, learn and play can affect our health. Some communities, for example, have greater access to affordable, healthy foods, making it easier for people to make healthy food choices. Likewise, people living in communities with easy access to parks, playgrounds, walkways, and bike paths are more likely to integrate physical activity into their daily routine.
The community is invited to attend a community meeting to talk about some of the conditions that promote health or pose barriers to health in our community. The meeting is part of a Healthy Communities effort to gather information about the policies and conditions that impact our health, especially as they relate to physical activity, nutrition, tobacco use, and the resources available to prevent and manage chronic disease.
