What: Coast Toasties Member Wins Humorous Speech and Table Topics contests
When: October 8, 2009
Where: Reedsport School District Office
 100 Ranch Road, Reedsport, OR
Who: Coast Toasties-Reedsport Toastmasters Club

The honors for the best Humorous Speech and Table Topics went to Reedsport Coast Toasties' member Kent Abendroth at the Area 34 Toastmasters' Annual contest held on October 8 in Florence.

Of the competition, Abendroth said it was a "very high quality competition," and a "very supportive environment. If it hadn't been I would have just melted. I think everyone in the club should take part in these contests." Competing against winners from three other Area 34 clubs, Abendroth was judged on speech development, effectiveness, value, audience response, physical appearance, voice, manner, appropriateness and correctness.

The judges for the contests included Area 34's current and past governor. According to current governor Jim Perry, Abendroth answered the "toughest question ever" during the Table Topics completion. During Abendroth's Humorous Speech, Perry said that Kent did a superb job and "had everyone just rolling."

Abendroth will compete in the Central Division's contests on October 24 from 2-5 pm at the Willamette Oaks Retirement Living Center in Eugene. Two winners at the divisional contest will be selected to compete at the upcoming District 07 Fall Conference and Contests in Portland.

The purpose of the humorous speech contest is to provide an opportunity for speakers to improve their speaking abilities, to recognize the best as encouragement to all, and to recognize the value of humor in speaking.

The purpose of the Table Topics speech contest is to encourage development of impromptu and or extemporaneous speaking skills and to recognize the best as encouragement to all.

Those interested in learning more about how to improve their communication skills are invited to attended the Coast Toasties' weekly meetings each Tuesday from 6:30pm to 7:30pm at the Reedsport School District Office.

'Faith Like Potatoes' to show in Reedsport

On Friday October 23 Reedsport Foursquare Church will hold a special showing of the award winning movie, "Faith Like Potatoes." The movie is based on the inspiring true story of Angus Buchan, a Zambian farmer, who leaves his farm in the midst of political unrest and travels south with his family, struggling to start a better life in a new country. Faced with ever-mounting challenges, hardships and personal turmoil, Angus quickly spirals down into a life consumed by anger, fear and destruction, but discovers that the key to healing himself lies in his unwavering belief in the power of faith.

Faith Like Potatoes weaves together the moving journey of a man, who like his potatoes, grows his faith, unseen until the harvest. "This is a great story that really brings a message of hope in the midst of trying times," states Terry Plotz, pastor of Reedsport Foursquare. "We showed it several months ago to our people and they were very encouraged.

The movie will begin at 7:00 PM. Popcorn and lemonade will be available. Because of some dramatic elements, children under 10 are not recommended to attend.

The Foursquare Church is located at 2900 Frontage Rd. in Reedsport. Regular Sunday morning services are at 10:00 am. Anyone having questions can contact Pastor Terry or Pastor Ben at the church office, 271-4414.
