A is for August and also for Art!

The next events for ECEC are on Saturday, August 8.  The opening reception for the Susan Applegate Art Show in the ECEC library starts at 4 p.m. with refreshments and viewing of her works.  Her show will remain on display through Fort Umpqua Days in September.

At 6 p.m., move to the greenhouse patio for dinner and a preview of items donated to be sold at the 2nd Hot Umpqua Nights art auction. An "Elkton Slow Cook BBQ" dinner will be served, with a limit of 100 seats.  Reservations can be made at  the ECEC office at 541 584-2692 at the advance price of $12.50. If space is available, dinners will be $15 at the door.

The auction starts at 7 p.m.  This is your chance to affordably own a piece of art from regional artists and support ECEC! Joan Arsenault and Jennifer Powell have collaborated on a special evening, joined by auctioneer Aleta McGee.  Many artists will be present to meet potential buyers.  Items listed so far include stained glass, jewelry, paintings and drawings.

The evening includes music by the Slow Ponies.  Members blend their voices in old-time familiar western tunes.

Come for the show and stay for dinner, the auction and the music!

Elkton Community Education Center (ECEC) will present an exhibit of works by Oregon artist Susan Applegate at the ECEC Community Building, opening Saturday, August 8, 2009 with a reception from 4-6 p.m. She writes "my upcoming exhibit at the ECEC Library will feature oil paintings that reflect connections to my home near Yoncalla and to the place we all call home......Oregon.  From the white tipped Cascade Mountains to the rolling grass matted hills of Douglas County, these paintings do more than chronicle landscape - they reach into the mysterious essence of "place".  The exhibit will include paintings of old oak trees that have grown on the family farm for as long as anyone can remember and have a presence as large as life, alongside paintings of my struggles with the aggressive blackberry vine. This becomes an exhibit that looks at our landscape through a language of love." Community donors have provided a state of the art hanging system within the library facility, which is open Wednesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Applegate show will remain on view through the ECEC Fort Umpqua Days on Labor Day weekend.

Also on Saturday, August 8, ECEC will hold its second Hot Umpqua Nights art auction benefit sale.  This year's theme for the art works is "Oregon Scenes." Pieces have been done in a number of different mediums and donated by regional artists. The viewing/dinner hour starts at 6pm on the patio of the ECEC greenhouse, in the native plant garden.  A "Western Oregon Slow Cooked" BBQ dinner will be served, preceding the auction, with reservations encouraged.  Cost of the dinner is $12.50 in advance or $15.00 at the door. Local wine and beverages will also be served. Reservations may be made at 541 584-2692. The auction will begin at 7pm.  Live music will follow the auction, performed by the "Slow Ponies," a group that includes members of the pioneer Applegate family, singing old-time western songs.

ECEC is a non-profit organization featuring a native Oregon plant and tree park with walking trails, a pavilion for native butterfly propagation, art exhibits with changing displays, a nature-themed gift shop and reconstruction of historic Fort Umpqua.  A community building with the Outpost Café for espresso, Umpqua ice cream and snacks also houses a lending library, staffed by volunteers and open 3 days each week.  Seasonally, local students are employed in a youth enterprise to staff the café and conduct tours of the park and Butterfly Pavilion.  ECEC is located just west of Elkton at 15850 Highway 38.  There is ample parking.  For information, call (541) 584-2692 or visit Elktonbutterflies.com.

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION   #8 of 9

WHAT:  Family Festival
WHERE: Reedsport Foursquare Church, 2900 Frontage Rd., Reedsport, OR 97467
WHEN: Saturday August 22nd from 2-5 PM
Contact: Terry Plotz 271-4414 or 662-0095

Help! Family Festival is upon us.

Many individuals and businesses are on board with this year's Family Festival, but help is needed to fill the 200 backpacks waiting to be filled this year. Event chairman Terry Plotz says, "Donations are a little slower coming in this year. Some folks who have helped over the years have said. 'I just can't.' Hopefully others will be able to step up!"

Family festival was birthed in 2003 from the dreams of several church members to do something for the children of Reedsport. After some brainstorming, people just started to work. The church had been sending teams to the Dream Center in Los Angeles hoping its members would catch the vision for reaching out to the community in new ways. "The Dream Center works with everyone: city government, Police Depts, Fire Depts, businesses, anyone who wants to help people and it has changed the inner city of LA. If it can work there, it can work here," explains Pastor Plotz.

And it has worked. Over the last 6 years hundreds of backpacks have been given to children during this free community event hosted at the Foursquare Church parking lot. According to Plotz, families start calling the church every August asking if the event is going to be held again. Besides the free school supplies, there are free amateur haircuts, a free clothing, face painting, games, free food, parenting information, safety information, and more. In a community with lots of folks in need, it has filled an important service.

Family Festival will run from 2-5 PM Saturday August 22nd. All events and information are free to those who attend. Clean used clothes (especially children's) for the clothing exchange and school supplies are still needed. Please drop them off to the church or call 271-4414 for pick-up.
