PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION #1 of 3

WHEN:     third Friday of each month at 5:00 PM
Contact: Steve Godin <stevegodin@cascadeaccess.com>

Have you been interested in participating in the local STEP, but been unable to attend their meetings?  Good news, the Gardiner, Reedsport, Winchester Bay Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) has changed the monthly meeting to the third Friday of each month at 5:00 PM.  The first meeting to take place at this new time is March 20 at the Gardiner Head Quarters location for STEP. STEP HQ is just South of Gardiner on Route 101, look for the blue STEP sign.

The purpose of this change in meeting time is to attract new members.  We are hopeful that the new time is more in tune with the availability of people who would like to participate in STEP.  Activities will start with a barbeque at 5:00 PM, free to members and perspective members.  The meeting will start promptly at 6:00 PM and will be followed by John Swanson, a local Umpqua River Guide who will describe productive river fishing methods.

STEP has many projects throughout the year that are focused on improving Chinook Salmon numbers in the Umpqua River.  Salmon are trapped in local creeks, the eggs are carefully monitored at Gardiner and the fish are raised to pre-smolt size and released in Winchester Bay.  You may have noticed our net pens on Dock D in the East Basin of Winchester Bay!  We also help people understand the importance of this fishery and work on the improvement of fish habitat in the local Umpqua River drainage.

STEP works closely with local government agencies as well as the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.  These organizations are very supportive of the GRWBSTEP and help us achieve our goals.

Please join us on March 20 to see how your local STEP works for you in putting more fish in the River.  You can help.

Over $70,000,000 in gold was packed to Scottsburg and shipped from that locale. In 1852 there were over 25 businesses, the first newspaper in southern Oregon, a wharf and 11 saloons. It was one of the leading ports in Oregon.

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION #3 of 3

WHAT:  NOAA Alert Radio
WHERE:  Douglas County
WHEN:   Now
WHO:  NOAA = National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration
Contact: Wayne A. Stinson, Emergency Manager,
Douglas County Sheriff's Office, (541) 440‑4448

Early notification of a potentially dangerous situation is one of the keys to keeping your family safe. You probably don't always have your TV or radio turned on in order to get emergency information. That's ok, you don't have to. Just get a NOAA* Alert Radio, keep it plugged in, and it will automatically alert you when there is a hazardous condition in our area.

A NOAA Alert Radio gives 24/7 alerts for tsunami warnings, severe weather events (tornadoes, flash floods and severe thunderstorms), and other emergencies in our immediate area. When there is an alert for our area, your NOAA Alert Radio will go "BEEP" really loud and get your attention, much like a smoke detector does. Press the 'weather/ hazard' button and you will hear an instant report of the potentially dangerous situation as well as recommended safety actions.

The National Weather Service sends a tone alert for warning messages that pose an immediate threat to life or property before they are broadcast on local radio or TV. The tone activates receivers even if the audio is turned off. This is especially useful for warnings which occur during the night when most people are asleep.

Every Wednesday between 11 and 12 noon, the National Weather Service issues a test alert. This is a great feature because when you get the test alert, you can rest assured that you'll get the alert in a real emergency too.
