Reedsport Athletics Benefit set for April 4
REEDSPORT – The 2009 benefit dinner and auction supporting athletic activities at Reedsport schools will be held Saturday, April 4 at the Reedsport Community Center. The event is the centerpiece of fundraising activities that maintain many of the athletic programs at Reedsport schools.
"This event is crucial in order for us to continue providing a variety of athletic activities for students," says Lynn Fulps, Athletic Director at Reedsport Jr./Sr. High School. "We will likely be forced to make additional cutbacks next year, making a successful auction even more important."
Sponsored by Bedrock's Restaurants, this will be the eighth year for the auction event, which has also turned into a school-wide reunion for many attendees, bringing together local residents as well as Reedsport alumni who now live outside the area.
With the struggling economy affecting many, auction committee member Joe Zelinski says there is more emphasis this year on activities for people to enjoy, and less on the total amount raised by the event. "Most everyone is feeling a financial pinch right now," says Zelinski. "We understand that, and want supporters to know they are appreciated no matter what form their support takes."
In addition to the dinner and auction on Saturday evening, event organizers are planning a golf scramble for Saturday morning, a family-oriented open swim at Highland Pool concurrent to the auction event, live music with PBA and the Hot Flashes at the Eagles Lodge on Friday night, and again Saturday night following the auction. A Saturday afternoon encore presentation of the Umpqua Discovery Center's seminar on Reedsport's history is also planned, with free admission for auction ticket holders.
Past auction events have included a wide range of items donated by individuals and businesses, including time share usage, college and pro sports tickets, artwork, hardware, jewelry, fine wines, golf outings, handmade arts and crafts, fishing gear and trips, hotel accommodations and more.
Dinner tickets are $25 per plate, which includes bidding privileges. $14 of this amount benefits the athletic programs. Tickets are available at Bedrock's Restaurant in Reedsport, at Reedsport High School, or via mail. Mail orders are encouraged, and receive expedited registration the night of the auction event. More information and a printable order form are available at www.bravesboosters.com/auction.

Reedsport was originally built on stilts above a swampy area. Rainbow Slough ran through the current waterfront area to isolate an island in the Umpqua River. When Rainbow Slough was filled in with dredge material in the 1920's, the real town of Reedsport began to take shape.

Reedsport Community Hosts Main Street Project Development Public Workshop for Historic Downtown Reedsport
Reedsport Oregon, April 10, 2009 -- The City of Reedsport will be hosting an evening with a Main Street Consultant from the State Main Street Program on April 28, 2009 from 7-9PM at the Senior Center in Reedsport. The public is encouraged to attend this important planning session for the future redevelopment of Old Town Reedsport.
This hands-on workshop will generate a list of potential projects that community members and organizations can complete in the next year or two, and will focus on the historic Old Towne section of the Reedsport commercial district. Light refreshment will be served, and no RSVP is required.
"This is a community driven workshop that needs broad community support if our redevelopment efforts are going to succeed" said Scott Somers, City Manager of Reedsport. He added, "This is a real opportunity for our community to participate in the process of determining the future of our downtown."
Funding for this project was obtained by the City through a technical assistance grant funded by the State Main Street Program. The grant is targeted for small communities in Oregon that qualify for technical assistance with downtown project development and planning.
For more information, contact Scott Somers, Reedsport City Manager at 541-271-3603 or Kathi Wall-Meyer at 541-271-3044.
