CASA Celebrates 20 Years
Learn how you can lift up the lives of Coos County youth
Formed in 1993, the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Coos County have provided a voice for abused and neglected children in the court system. Over those 20 years CASA has advocated for over 800 children in Coos County.
Coos County CASA, a program of Oregon Coast Community Action, will celebrate these 20 years, and honor the work of their dedicated volunteers, at a 20th Anniversary Open House Reception, taking place Thursday, April 25, from 3-5pm on the 2nd floor of ORCCA's Child and Family Resource Center, located at 1855 Thomas Ave. in Coos Bay.
Every year nearly 400 children spend time in foster care in Coos County.  Last year 199 children had no one advocating for their rights because only 49% of the children in need received CASA services.  The CASA program is committed to making sure that every child in need has access to a CASA volunteer.
"For 20 years we have seen the significant positive impact CASAs have had on the lives of over 800 foster children in our community, but we still have more work to do," says Twila Veysey, CASA Director. "Our society has an obligation to ensure that the basic rights and needs of every child are met.  CASA volunteers fight for these rights.  Every child who cannot live safely at home should have a CASA volunteer who will help ensure a safe passage out of foster care and into a loving, nurturing permanent home."
The event will help bring awareness to the many ways our community can help prevent child abuse and neglect, in honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The reception will also include a ceremony to honor those currently advocating for our county's youth in recognition of National Volunteer Week.
For those interested in lifting up the lives of our local youth, the Open House will be a unique opportunity for community members to find out more about the program and speak with current CASAs about the work they do.

CASA of Coos County, a program of Oregon Coast Community Action, has been operating since 1993 with the support of donors, grants and foundations, including contributions from Bay Area Hospital, the City of Coos Bay, Coos Bay/North Bend Rotary Club, Cow Creek Foundation, Oregon Volunteers Commission, Pacific Power Foundation, Zonta Club of Coos Bay, and a number of local organizations and generous individuals.
Oregon Coast Community Action is a non-profit network of programs that help feed, house, warm, and educate the communities of the South Coast. Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and well-preserved piece, but to slide across the finish line broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out, leaking oil, shouting GERONIMO !!!!

If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be "meetings."
