Schedule Complete for This Weekend's Conference
The time has arrived for this year's Sharing the Coast Conference, and the full schedule is now available: http://oregonshores.org/. You'll find it packed with a wide range of coastal science and natural history, including slide talks, workshops, field trips, and even a trivia contest.
The conference arrives this weekend, with activities Friday evening (March 15) and Saturday (March 16) taking place in Bandon, and shifting to Charleston on Sunday (March 17). Sharing the Coast is CoastWatch's annual collaboration with the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators (NAME).
Online pre-registration is underway. While you are welcome to simply arrive and register on the day of the event, it will help us plan if you will go to the NAME site and pre-register. http://pacname.org/news.shtml#oregon
Oregon Shores board member (and CoastWatcher) Al Solomon kicks things off Friday evening when he speaks on "Weather Extremes and Climate Change: The Essential Linkage." Al spent a career studying global ecological change with the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other institutions. He received training in developing this talk from Al Gore's Climate Reality group. Al Solomon will speak at 7 p.m. at The Barn, Bandon's community conference center (1200 11th St., S.W.). This event is free and open to everyone, whether or not they are attending the rest of the conference.
Other speakers will cover everything from climate change and tsunami debris to coastal geology and oceanography. Among the highlights will be long-time CoastWatch favorite Cynthia Trowbridge, speaking on identifying natural materials in the driftline, and later leading a field trip, and seabird researcher Rob Suryan, discussing new research on how climate change may be affecting our coastal bird populations.
The Barn will also be the scene of a social gathering Saturday evening, which will feature a talk on exploring undersea volcanoes and tracking earthquakes by Bill Hanshumaker, Oregon Sea Grant's chief scientist, and a special trivia (but not really) contest. Beer and wine will be available
On Sunday, March 17, the conference will move to the Boat House Auditorium at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Charleston for presentations on coastal science in the morning and field trips in the afternoon. You'll find all this and more in the schedule. Cost is $15 for current Oregon Shores and NAME members (you can join or renew and take the discount), $25 for non-members, and $7.50 for students. Cost includes lunch and snacks on Saturday.
