BACKGROUND ON THE LOWER UMPQUA FLYCASTERS
The Lower Umpqua Flycasters, a non-profit fly fishing club based in Reedsport, Oregon, was founded in 1990 to accommodate persons with all levels of fly fishing and fly tying skills. The club is a member of the Oregon Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers.
Club meetings and special sessions have featured fly-tying, rod building, leader construction, fly casting, and many other activities. Outings have included fly fishing for trout, half pounders, and salmon. In addition, the club hosts an annual Tube-O-Rama float trip on the Umpqua River fishing for smallmouth bass.
Each year, LUFC sponsors a Fly Fishing Expo to introduce the sport of fly fishing to the general public. The Expo features lectures and demonstrations by experts in fly fishing, fly tying, fly casting, and conservation.
The Lower Umpqua Flycasters work with the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife on projects that pertain to the conservation and restoration of coastal streams and the enhancement of local fisheries.

INVITATION TO 2013 EDITION OF 'SHARING THE COAST' CONFERENCE
Seabird researcher Rob Suryan, marine ecologist Cynthia Trowbridge, climate scientist Al Solomon and many other scientists and naturalists will be featured when the annual "Sharing the Coast Conference" comes to Coos County this year, March 15-17.
The conference is an annual collaboration between CoastWatch (the volunteer program of the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition) and the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators (NAME). This time around, "Sharing the Coast" will take place in both Bandon (Friday evening and Saturday) and Charleston (Sunday), with field trips elsewhere.
The conference will kick off Friday evening when Al Solomon speaks on "Weather Extremes and Climate Change: The Essential Linkage." Solomon, now a Charleston resident, recently retired from a career spent studying global ecological change with the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other institutions. He received training in developing this talk from Al Gore's Climate Reality group. Al Solomon will speak at 7 p.m. at The Barn, Bandon's community conference center (1200 11th St., S.W.).
The Barn will also be the site of Saturday's events. These will include presentations by Cynthia Trowbridge on natural materials found in the driftline; Al Dohner (a retired doctor who created his talk for Physicians for Social Responsibility) on marine debris and its impact on the oceans; Rob Suryan of the Hatfield Marine Science Center on Oregon's seabird populations and how climate change is affecting them; and Jessica Miller, also of the HMSC, who studies invasive species and will discuss how tsunami debris may be carrying them across the Pacific. Miller will also lead a workshop in the afternoon for those interested in participating in a project to keep watch for invasives; another workshop will be devoted to teaching marine and shoreline science.
Saturday afternoon will also feature field trips, including one to Port Orford to observe CoastWatching and marine debris monitoring in action; another to the Washed Ashore headquarters south of Bandon, where marine debris is turned into art; and a third field trip to explore the shoreline led by Cynthia Trowbridge.
Saturday will wind up with a reception beginning at 5 p.m. back at the Barn, featuring both a short talk by Bill Hanshumaker, Oregon Sea Grant Chief Scientist, on studying undersea volcanoes, and a coast-oriented "trivia" contest.
On Sunday, March 17, the conference will move to the Boat House Auditorium at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Charleston. Presentations planned for that morning will cover the oceanography of Oregon's nearshore ocean, coastal geology, and estuarine ecology. Field trips Sunday afternoon will focus on the sandy shore and dunes, and on the geology of our dynamic shoreline.

FIELD TRIP DESCRIPTIONS
Port Orford: Travel to CoastWatch Mile 46, between the town of Port Orford and Humbug Mountain. Join members of the Redfish Rocks Community Team who have adopted this mile, along with CoastWatch Director Phillip Johnson. We will observe how team members collect detailed data on marine debris, learn how to conduct a beach cleanup, and see how CoastWatch shoreline monitoring is done.
Washed Ashore: Travel just south of Bandon to the headquarters of the unique Washed Ashore project, through which volunteers turn large quantities of marine debris into art. We'll tour the facility, and then participate in a how-to workshop on marine debris art.
Exploring the Driftline: Join marine ecologist Cynthia Trowbridge in walking the shore and identifying the wide range of natural materials that wash up there.
Sandy Shores and Dunes: Naturalist and ecotour leader Marty Giles will lead a beachwalk devoted to all aspects of sandy shore and foredune natural history. Tour starts at Horsfall Beach, north of North Bend; parking fee required for those traveling in their own vehicle.
Coastal Geology: Ron Metzger, geology professor at Southwestern Oregon Community College, will lead a tour of various sites aimed at exploring the geological forces that underlie the shoreline we see.
