Marshfield High School 1st Annual Baby Food Drive!
This fall, a group of local students are doing their part to help keep the babies in our community fed and healthy with their 1st Annual Baby Food Drive. From November 19th until December 17th, students at Marshfield High School will be collecting baby food and related items to benefit families in need of assistance in our community.
The drive is being organized and managed by Marshfield's Treasure Island Coffee Café Baristas and the MHS Key Club. Students are encouraged to bring their donations into school, and community members can drop off items at the Marshfield Main Office, located at S. 10th St. and Ingersoll St. in Coos Bay.
The drive is primarily student-led. "You only hear about a food drive for adults not for babies," says Kassy Freerksen, one of the students organizing the drive. "When I heard about a baby food drive I was very excited."
The idea for the drive originated with the Café's assisting teacher, Stacy Gulseth. "Marshfield High School does a traditional food drive every year.   As I was looking through my cupboards I noticed I had a lot of baby food jars," says Stacy. "I immediately came up with the idea of a baby food drive.  That's when I called Oregon Coast Community Action and presented the idea to them."
The group will be accepting non-perishable baby food and cereals, formula, new bottles, diapers, and baby wipes. The public is reminded that extra care needs to be taken with donating baby foods, and that expiration dates must be strictly adhered to. Oregon Coast Community Action will distribute donated items to local agencies in the South Coast Food Share Network at no cost.
"It is inspiring to see students with a passion and desire to give back to their community," says Patricia Gouveia, ORCCA's Interim CEO. "We encourage our community partners and neighbors to step up and support these students' efforts in the coming weeks."
The South Coast Food Share is a program of the Oregon Coast Community Action, a non-profit network of programs that help feed, house, warm, and educate the communities of the South Coast. For more information, please call (541) 435-7754 or learn more at www.orcca.us. For more information on the drive, please contact Stacy Gulseth at (541) 269-6650.
