Dune Classic Volleyball Tournament
set for September 7
REEDSPORT— The 24th annual Dune Classic Volleyball Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, September 7, in the gymnasiums at Reedsport Community Charter School.
Eight area high school teams will be participating in the pool-play event, which begins at 10:00 a.m. Reedsport, Pacific, Glide, Yoncalla, North Douglas, Oakland, Coquille and defending-champion Siuslaw will compete in the day-long event.
"This should be another exciting season for high school volleyball in our area," says Joe Zelinski of the Reedsport Braves Boosters Association, which presents the annual event as a fundraiser for the organization. "Our early-season tournament is a great way for these teams to start their seasons, and face some really good competition." Zelinski added of the host Reedsport Braves, "Our girls came up just short of winning this tournament— and the state 2A championship— last year. It should be a lot of fun to see what unfolds this year."
The top two teams from each pool advance to the semi-finals matches, which are played simultaneously, and usually start at approximately 4:00 p.m. Winners advance to the championship match, which begins at approximately 5:15 p.m.
"I'm always surprised at the level of competition at this tournament, especially for this early in the season. The girls really get into it," Zelinski added. "It's an excellent opportunity for the teams to have a day-long session of skill-building, rotation adjustments, and physical conditioning, as each school prepares for its regular season."
All-day admission to the event is $5.00 for all spectators. The Braves Boosters will also be operating an expanded grill and concessions service, including brunch offerings, at the rear breezeway outside the RCCS gymnasiums.
The Boosters are seeking volunteers to help administer the tournament, especially line judges. Anyone who can spare a few hours on Saturday, September 7 is encouraged to contact Joe Zelinski at 541-999-6947.
