Baleen Whale comes to Downtown Coos Bay!
Coos Bay, OR (May 18, 2011) –A local group of environmentally conscious, artistically inclined teens have convinced Coos Bay City Council members to let them pick up their paintbrushes for a good cause. Teens will expand a public art project, reminding community members to protect our bay and refrain from spilling harmful substances into storm drains. Teens will be painting a Storm Drain Mural featuring a baleen whale that will encourage citizens to keep our bay clean and beautiful.
This project is a collaborative effort and community partners include the City of Coos Bay, the GUILD after-school arts program, and Community Action Adventure, a program of Oregon Coast Community Action (ORCCA). The mural will be located in Downtown Coos Bay Pedway, just south of the Egyptian Theatre.
CH2MHill, an international environmental engineering and consulting company, has generously sponsored this project. They will provide paint for the mural project, as well as a pizza party for the hard-working teens. CH2MHill has sponsored Community Action Adventure projects in the past, and provided supplies for the Fall 2010 Salmon Life Cycle and Squid Storm Drain Murals.
“Every youth should have opportunities to thrive,” comments ORCCA CEO Mary Schoen-Clark “The storm drain murals are a great way for teens to leave a positive mark on the City. We appreciate the support of our community partners in making this project a success.”
Pairing social responsibility with fun can achieve striking results. Providing opportunities for teens to engage with their community helps build the next generation of community leaders, and creates a culture of passionate concern for the greater good. Coastal Douglas Arts & Business Alliance – Upcoming Art Events
First Friday . . . Art for Everyone is a FREE EVENT.  George McNair will be the featured artist for the next First Friday event to be held Friday, June 3, 2011 between 5 and 7 pm.  George’s love of art began in high school with a teacher he describes as “neat.”  The art teacher was Miss Fonken, who was “really positive and encouraging.”  Later while at the University of Oregon, he began doing pen and ink drawings of landscape projects in very large scale.  Some were large color works of 24 x 36 inches in size.
Around 1980 George began to do pen and ink drawings of childhood memories, Oregon river and ocean scenes.  He diverged from pen and inks and tried acrylic paints and continued his focus on fishing, boats, rivers, water reflections, ocean rocky beaches, and lately undersea impressions.  His work is on display all along the Oregon Coast from Newport to Gold Beach.
First Friday Future Dates:  July 1st - Myrtlewood Gallery featuring miniature carvings by Kimberly King; August 5th - Reedsport Natural Foods featuring handmade hunting bows by Norm Johnson and vessels by Garth Mast and Bill Karcher; September 2nd – CDABA Art Auction at the Winchester Bay Community Center; October 7th - Reedsport Natural Foods; November 4th - Lower Umpqua Hospital featuring paintings by Christine Davis; and December 2nd - First Friday, Reedsport Natural Foods and 2nd Anniversary Celebration at Coastal Ceramics and Ocean Breeze Flowers & Gifts.
Reminder:
CDABA will be hosting its second annual Art Auction on Friday, September 2nd in conjunction with Art by the Bay in Winchester Bay.  Artists and owners of art can commission their pieces to be sold.  The artists / owner will establish a minimum price for their piece and will retain eighty percent of its selling price.  Art that does not sell is retained by the owner.  Limit two pieces per person.  CDABA will also accept pieces as a donation to CDABA to help support its community programs.  Anyone interested in making a tax deductible contribution can obtain more information by contacting Tamara Szalewski (541-271-2485) or Kathleen Miller (541-271-2101)
